Devil: Highly effective with a satifying finale

Thursday, September 16th, 2010 by Rohan

Just about few days ago it was announced that Universal studios won’t screen their thriller “Devil” produced by M.Night Shyamalan to critics.  Is that a bad sign or a good sign for a film? – Well, let the fans and the audience to decide whether it’s a good sign or a bad sign not screening a film to the critics. If you ask me what I think about Universal Studios’ decision, my opinion is that it is a good sign, for all the critics out there can sit back and wait until the 17th of September which is the official release date of DEVIL.

The film is a supernatural thriller which comes from the mind of Academy Award nominated wirter/director/producer M.Night Shyamalan. Not going to mention its plot as you all know about it by now. Devil is the first in Shyamalan’s “Night Chronicles’ trilogy of films that he produces and others direct.

Thanks to a registered user at IMDB who posted his first review and it’s the first review not related to any of the critics that kept bashing M.Night Shyamalan since the release of “Lady In The Water” until the release of “The Last Airbender”.

REVIEW

Maybe it’s because M Night Shyamalan is finally coming to terms that he no longer is the toast of the town, that he has decided to focus his energies on producing and writing suspenseful thrillers for his project known as The Night Chronicles, with the first film Devil off the blocks, and others to come including his original story idea from his planned sequel to Unbreakable. We know how Shyamalan…

Exclusive: Interview with Dowdle brothers

Monday, September 13th, 2010 by Rohan

Little is known about the film. Cameras quietly rolled late last year in Toronto and Universal originally had it pegged for a February 2011 release. A trailer, however, received a good response and a free slot opened up on the studio’s schedule earlier than expected. Now, Devil is expected to reign in theaters on September 17.

John and Drew Dowdle, the brothers behind 2008′s Quarantine and the still unreleased The Poughkeepsie Tapes (thanks to the once indecisive and now ailing MGM), sat down with Shock Till You Drop to talk with me about their time directing and producing Devil, a film they became attached to while developing The Coup.

We cover all of the bases, from script development to working with Shyamalan to the film’s PG-13 rating.

Shock Till You Drop: Did Shyamalan seek you guys out for this or did you vie for the job?

John Dowdle: He actually saw The Poughkeepsie Tapes and he loved it. But he wanted to know we could do something fun. So he saw Quarantine and the next day invited us out.

Devil featurette

Thursday, September 9th, 2010 by Rohan

It’s an intriguing premise. A new behind the scenes featurette for DEVIL has been released. The featurette provides a few more clues into who or what the Devil might be, while also discussing the filmmakers’s perception for true horror. Chris Messina plays the lead role of Bowden, sobered-up homicide detective who is involved with a group of people trapped in an  elevator – when they begin to mysteriously die one by one. From the mind of M.Night Shyamalan, Devil is the first entry in the filmmaker’s “Night Chronicles” trilogy.

You will be stuck with the Devil in theatres on September 17th. Thanks to APPLE for the featurette and the folks at  BLOODY-DISGUSTING for the video below. Enjoy!

M. Night Shyamalan Open To An Airbender Sequel

Saturday, September 4th, 2010 by Rohan

M.Night Shyamalan just talked to MTV during a press junket for the first of his Night Chronicle thrillers DEVIL, Shyamalan was asked whether he thought a sequel might ever see the greenlight.

“I don’t know because there are so many factors they take into account,” answered the director, adding, ”I guess it will get into an area where it becomes a discussion — like pros and cons,” he added. “Should we make ‘Transformers 8?’ — that kind of conversation.”

With another two Night Chronicle’s movies planned, which he will conceive and produce though not write or direct, Shyamalan is very much focused on his thrillers. He would, however, be open to returning to the saga.

“Really, I’m just writing my next thriller, and if I get the call, that would be great.”

‘Unbreakable 2′ repurposed for ‘Night Chronicles’

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 by Rohan

MTV Movies recently had the chance to sit with Writer/Director/Producer M.Night Shyamalan where Shyamalan was again asked about the possibility of a sequel to his 2000 dark superhero film “Unbreakable”. Previously M.Night Shyamalan stated that he is looking for the right story for “Unbreakable 2″, yet we were not sure if M.Night Shyamalan was seriously considering a sequel to Unbreakable.

It’s a great news for all the fans out there because M.Night Shyamalan revealed that his “Unbreakable 2″ story will indeed hit the big screens, but as a completely different film.

“I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to ‘Unbreakable’ for one of the ‘Night Chronicles,’” revealed Shyamalan.

“It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for ‘Unbreakable,’ and it was too much,” he said of his reasons for excising the element that was intended to become “Unbreakable 2.” “There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, ‘I’ll make this the second flick.’”

However, as the filmmaker got caught up in other projects and “Unbreakable 2″ became less likely, the seed of that idea still managed to grow.

“I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, ‘This could be a standalone movie,’” he said. “I’ll just say it: the third ‘Night Chronicles’ movie is what would have been the sequel [to 'Unbreakable']. So now I need to come up with a new idea.”

Shyamalan also semi-validated “Unbreakable” fans’ appreciation for the 2000 film, admitting that it’s also one of his own favorites.

“Literally, that’s the question I get asked the most anywhere around the world — if I’m making the sequel to ‘Unbreakable,’” he laughed. “I love that movie. ‘Unbreakable’ and ‘The Village’ are my favorite two movies of mine.”

What you guys think about a sequel to Unbreakable?
