Scenes we love: ‘Signs’

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011 by Rohan

Without a question, Shyamalan’s ‘Signs’ is one of my all time favorite alien films. And also one of my all time favorite horror films. This film scared the day lights out of me. And it still does scare me no matter how many time I watch this film. It’s one of Shyamalan’s best films in my opinion. The scene that I never forget is when the alien steps out from behind the bushes in the alleyway. And, it still makes me to jump.

Anyways, the folks at Cinematical recently published an interesting article talking about the scenes from ‘Signs.’ I find it an interesting read, for the article explains Mr. Shyamalan’s directing technique. Masterfully deliberate pacing, and brilliant use of off-screen space. And there praising of the film that it is surely among the most frightening PG-13 horror movies of all time.

Hold On Mr. Mathew Fox

Monday, February 21st, 2011 by Rohan

Happy Presidents Day Everyone! – It’s a beautiful sunny Monday morning in our city and  I took my hot cup of tea in my room and went online to check what’s really going on in the entertainment world. I came across this article about this actor “Mathew Fox.” I didn’t even knew the guy until I read the article and checked his IMDb list. Some of you may know him if you watch the show LOST, but I don’t watch that show, so I didn’t knew this guy actually existed.

You can read the article here. He is really angry, for he can’t the get the big roles in big movies that he fights for. He claims that Matt Damon gets all those roles and he is also angry because of 3D and also angry because he took his kid to watch “The Last Airbender” and he thinks the film is awful. And, he goes on to claim that M.Night Shyamalan hasn’t directed a good movie since “The Sixth Sense.” I find his remarks absurd and shocking. Like everyone else he takes on Shyamalan to get attention. I know everyone has their own opinion, but he is angry because of the roles he can’t get and angry because of mainstream film industry in the U.S.

What really bothers me is when someone like him who hasn’t done anything yet and never contributed to the cinema anything  goes on and opens the mouth and bashes another artist. He claims that he will be quitting acting. Well, Mr. Mathew Fox if you by any chance come across this article,  we all M.Night Shyamalan fans and everyone else would never notice your resignation anyway. And here is piece of advise, watch all Shyamalan films and all those actors in his films you won’t be getting to their level. Not even to the level of Haley Joel Osment.

UNpopular opinion: The Last Airbender

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 by Rohan

A friend, Paul Gagne who writes for Joblo.com has written an interesting article under their ongoing column called ‘Unpopular Opinion’ which features different takes on films that either writer hated, but that the majority of film fans loved, or that the writer loved, but that most others loathed. The film in question is ‘The Last Airbender.’ We all know about the negativity which is surrounding the film. Some loved the film and some hated it. Everyone has their own opinion, right? — But what’s really interesting about Paul’s take on ‘The Last Airbender’ is that he has the spotlight from a different angle and that pretty much explains it all in my opinion. It’s an interesting read and thanks to Joblo.com and Paul letting me share the article with the rest of Shyamalan fans.

“So, my final take on the film is that it stepped up to the plate with emotional arcs for the two main characters, great special effects and impressive fight scenes, great set design and costumes, and just a hint of socio-political undertones.”

Career overviews of the six biggest

Friday, February 4th, 2011 by Rohan

Found an interesting article  by the folks at sofas and sectionals today. These guys have created a stat-packed tables detailing just how much money 6 of the biggest name directors in the world have both spent and made on their movies to calculate their rate of return. The directors in question are James Cameron, M.Night Shyamalan, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Michael Bay and George Lucas.

By using the sources such as Forbes, IMDb, Box office mojo and celebrityworth.net, they have worked out using the takings and budget for each movie, just how much the rate of return for each director is with a final pie chart who has the greatest overall return. This might surprise some, but who really knows what’s going to happen. I found the article interesting and fun to share. Let us know what you guys think.

Shyamalan: ‘One Thousand A.E. won’t be in 3-D

Friday, January 14th, 2011 by Rohan

As you all know that M.Night Shyamalan’s movies are always shrouded in secrecy and getting him to divulge anything regarding his projects is near impossible. The folks at MTV news caught up with Shyamalan on the National Board Of Review Awards red carpet asking the director about his next project “One Thousand A.E.,” which is starring Jaden Smith.

Shyamalan was asked if he is making “One Thousand A.E. his next film, Night replied, “It’s starting to look like the Smith family and Shyamalan will be doing a movie together.” MTV also asked the director if Will, Jada and Willow will be starring, but Night laughed and stated, “you never know.” “Their dog maybe.” Shyamalan said that any Smith can work in his films if they want to.

And it is also rumored that Will and Jada are going to be the producers on the film. And as far as any roles are concerned on who is playing who and what, no one is sure yet as we stated before that Shyamalan keeps everything locked in the safe until it’s cooked up well.  Night also told MTV news  that “One Thousand A.E. is a sci-fi movie and it will NOT be in 3-D, but he said this that he does have idea for something kind of technically interesting though.

Devil: One of the top horror films of 2010

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010 by Rohan

This nice guy, Jeff Allard of shocktillyoudrop has listed his top 5 horror movies of 2010 and also his worst ones. You are welcome to check out his whole list of top and the worst, but what we at Mnightfans got more intrigued is that Devil is listed under his top 5 horror films of 2010. You can read below what he has to say about the film, Devil. An idea from the mind of you know who.

M. Night Shyamalan’s reputation as an Alfred Hitchcock or a Rod Serling for a new generation has been eroding for years, with films like The Village (2004) and The Happening (2008) getting derisive responses from audiences. Even though he didn’t direct Devil, just the sight of Shyamalan’s name as producer was enough for many audiences to boo the trailers for Devil, the first in a proposed anthology series dubbed The Night Chronicles. When Devil – directed by John Erick Dowdle (Quarantine, 2008) – was released this past September, though, the skepticism towards it was largely dispelled. Based on a story concept by Shyamalan (with a screenplay by Brian Nelson), Devil harkened back to classic Twilight Zone, showing a refreshing sense of narrative economy. Where Shyamalan’s films have long been accused of being overblown, Devil was modest in every regard. A pleasing slice of old-school supernatural hokum, Devil was a promising move in the right direction for Shyamalan. Perhaps when the trailer for the next installment of The Night Chronicles arrives, audiences won’t be so quick to jeer his name.

Give us your opinions about the Devil. What do you think about the first chapter in Night Chronicles and are you stoked about the upcoming thriller from The Night Chronicles?

M.Night Shyamalan: CGI doesn’t scare me anymore

Thursday, December 16th, 2010 by Rohan

Writer, Director and Producer, M.Night Shyamalan tells Metro about his feelings towards using CGI, his favorite directors and his most challenging film to date. M.Night Shyamalan, 40, first found commercial success in 1999 with The Sixth Sense. You can read the rest of the interview below and let us know your opinion whether Shyamalan should use CGI again.

What was making The Last Airbender like?

Because the movie took two-and-a-half years to make I had a lot of emotions. It was a great learning experience. I learned about CGI in a hardcore way. I’m so grateful to all the teachers I had on the film, whether that’s for stunts or CGI. It’s from a cartoon aimed at children. I made it for my seven-year-old daughter so it had a positive family atmosphere on the set.

Shyamalan unaware of “bender” slang use

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010 by Rohan

About fews months ago Dev Patel one of the stars in M.Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender defended the use of the term “bender” in The Last Airbender.  When he was asked, he told The Times: “It was too integral to the movie. We couldn’t call them fire or air manipulators. It would have been moving too far from the source material.” That’s why he didn’t inform Shyamalan about the term. You can read that article at Digital Spy.

So today, Digital Spy  reports that M. Night Shyamalan has admitted that he was unaware of how the term “bender” is used as slang in the UK. Discussing the use of the term in The Last Airbender, Shyamalan told Metro that he did not consider changing the title.

When it was suggested that ‘some immature cinema-goers found dialogue such as, “look out he’s a bender” hilarious’, the director said: “I thought you guys used bender as a term for getting drunk, like, ‘I’m going on a bender’. “I wasn’t aware of that term. It was just the title of the cartoon show.”

He added: “Sometimes the title gets changed for particular territories. The title of my film The Happening was changed in some countries because happening meant party.”

Music in the movies: James Newton Howard

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 by Rohan

A movie’s music is one of its most important aspects; a characteristic that is often taken for granted.  A film can reveal so much within its music.  Beyond the creepy background music of thrillers that tells you the killer is around the corner, music has the ability to expose characters’ feelings, actions, and a film’s tensions. Thanks to Den of Geek for the article and in their latest music in the movies column, Den of Geek salutes the work of  James Newton Howard, the purveyor of themes for many M.Night Shyamalan films.

An accomplished musician at a young age, James Newton Howard studied at the USC School of music, and after he graduated, began a career as a session musician, working with some of the biggest names in the business before embarking on a career as a composer for film and TV. He composed the iconic score for the TV show ER, as well as scoring a wealth of memorable scores for movies over the years.

With the imminent release of The Last Airbender on Blu-ray and DVD, I thought now would be the ideal time to look at his work with the director M. Night Shyamalan, as well as two of my other favourites in his back catalogue…
