Night Shyamalan made an appearance at Nickelodeon’s Upfront in New York.  There is no word on if he showed any new footage from his Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation that is coming this summer.  At the event, Nickelodeon presented their new and returning properties to exhibitors and different media.

Nickelodeon got its Thursday-morning upfront pitch rolling with an extended cameo by director M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), who is helming the theatrical The Last Airbender for Nickelodeon Movies. Based on Nick’s animated strip Avatar: The Last Airbender, Shyamalan’s live-action flick opens July 2.

While Shyamalan didn’t floor buyers with one of his patented vertiginous plot twists, the standing-room-only crowd at New York’s Manhattan Center suggested that the story line of this year’s upfront is likely to take a radically different direction from last year’s bazaar. Jim Perry, evp, 360 brand sales, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group, said that while he would not call the market, he firmly believes that “it will do be stronger and will move earlier,” adding that Nick enters the season “in a great place.”

And for those wondering why I’m not going, to be honest, I don’t know.  But I’ve been pretty busy with marriage prep.  You see, I proposed to my girlfriend of four years on the set of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  You can read about it at that link.  I’ve had the opportunity to meet Michael Apted, now twice, as well as Andrew Adamson and many other amazing people.  Someday, the opportunity to meet Night will present itself.  If you see him, put in a good word for me.

“I talked to [Shyamalan] over the holidays, and he is still thinking about doing the fight movie between me and Sam that we were going to do,” Willis told MTV News.

“We chose to do the origin,” he explained, indicating that there was discussion early on about whether Willis’ character and the villain played by Samuel L. Jackson should square off in the first movie or a sequel.

“As long as Sam can make it, I’m up for it,” said Willis.

It was by no means a long list, but was summed up with his favorite being Edward Norton’s character turn in PRIMAL FEAR and then second favorite being that Bruce Willis was actually dead in THE SIXTH SENSE. I agreed with both choices and it got me thinking about M. Night Shyamalan. Shyamalan is now a household name, but his genius when it comes to films is split down the middle for most people (and in some cases resting more on the negative side). With a slew of films on the horizon, I’m hoping he can turn that around.

• M. Night gives her a rave review.
“I told the studio I didn’t want to make this movie without her,” Shyamalan tells PEOPLE. “I said that only once before in my career, and that was when I met Haley [Joel Osment] in the Sixth Sense auditions.” They’re buds off-camera, too: He came to Peltz’s 15th birthday party with his daughters.

• She’s down with the guys from Twilight.
Peltz and Jackson Rathbone (who plays Jasper in the Twilight movies) star in The Last Airbender as brother and sister, a relationship that came easily to them. “The funny thing was, at the audition, he completely acted like my older brother,” says the actress. Plus, a source tells PEOPLE that Peltz has been cast in the next Robert Pattinson film. But don’t expect her to start dating Taylor Lautner tomorrow. This young actress comes with built-in security – six brothers!

• She’s one cool chick.
As a lover of scary movies, Peltz counts The Sixth Sense among her favorites (“and not just because Night is the director,” she says with a laugh), along with some others. “I saw Paranormal Activity on Halloween with all my friends,” she says. “It scared me, but it was so much fun.”

For M. Night Shyamalan, it was his then 7-year old daughter who hooked him on the Nickelodeon series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”

“She made us watch as a family and all four of us were hooked, “ Shyamalan said. “I was like, ‘This would make a killer movie.  And my wife who really has been kind of in neutral about my career was insane about it. Insane about it: ‘You have to do it. This is it. This is the one.’ ”

“Aang himself needs to find balance to be the Avatar and to master each of these elements,” the director said. “We get to see the process of someone mastering themselves through the three seasons to get to peace.”

Shyamalan sees similar spiritual motiffs in “Star Wars” and “The Matrix.”

“In the first ‘Matrix,’ you realize that what you’re seeing is all false,” Shyamalan said. “Those are really ancient ideas. Basic old, old religion. This has that as well. So if you go on the journey and you’ll feel that epiphany on top of a great roller-coaster ride. It’s going to be something.“
