Shyamalan Planning a Different Avatar
Source: Variety January 9, 2007

According to Variety, M. Night Shyamalan and Paramount are planning their own "Avatar" project, based on the popular Nickelodoen kids TV series.

The filmmaker has signed a three-picture deal with Paramount's MTV Films and Nick Movies to adapt the animated children's series "Avatar: The Last Airbender" for the big screen. He will write, direct and produce the potential kids franchise. The film version will be live-action.

Nick TV's "Avatar" follows the adventures of the successor to a long line of Avatars who must put aside his irresponsible ways and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations. The show was created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

The trade adds that Paramount confirmed the deal with Shyamalan just hours after 20th Century Fox announced it has given the green light to James Cameron's Avatar.

Although they may have the same name, the two projects have nothing to do with each other in terms of storylines. Cameron's is a sci-fi action-adventure that he's been working on for 11 years.

Paramount said it has registered the name of its project with the Motion Picture Association of America. A Fox rep said, "We own the movie title 'Avatar.' There won't be another film called 'Avatar' coming from anyplace."

I'm not too thrilled with this...  :(

I am also dissappointed  , M. Night Shyamalon is too much of a genius to do a movie based on a children's cartoon.  I hope some legal issue prevents him from being able to do it

Ah come on you guys, sure i'd love to see another original film by the guy, but why can't we at least give this a chance?  I'm not a thousand perecnt thrilled about it, but if anyone is going to make a realistic film about the series then I'd rather it be him. Besides, aren't you at least one bit curious to see what Appa would look like if he were real?  If he's wanting to make this, then shouldn't we, as a collective, be supportive?  If he chooses to make this then he must have a reason for it.

I agree with the last poster.  Give this a chance.  Night needs this to help bring the masses and critics back on his side.  I'd say it's easier to do just that with a simple kids story than it is with another original piece.  If anything, it might help him regain his confidence (which may or may not be damaged).  Besides, the show is actually pretty decent.  I watched an episode a while back and it was certainly something that I could see Night doing a well job with.

Finally, I believe the article said Night was still shopping around his original ideas and that this film may not necessarily be the first one he makes.  We might get a couple of his original works before we even see Airbender on the big screen.  So fans, relax and let our man do what he does best.  Although, I must admit, I did not like his last effort.

Have you all no faith? Not only have I seen the show but I find it a breath of fresh air on Nickelodeon. Also, I think a lot of you are missing a critical point in this choice of film. The show captures many elements that Night portrays in his original works. Most notably that EVERYBODY has a purpose, and sometimes those most unlikely to lead were always meant to. Also Night seems to like underlining the importance and special traits that children have (i.e. Cole Sear, Joey Dury). Another thought that crossed my mind is, maybe he wants to appeal to a younger generation, and provoke change in them. So this film could very easily hold some moral value and important meaning. Looking forward to it. And for all of you who already have you minds closed to this, remember Lady. Good luck Night!

If you ask me, now we can seperate the true M. Night fans to the ones who "just like his movies".

I have never seen this show and I can't wait to see what Night does. I trust him and the choices he makes when it comes to film. This is going to be exciting! Also, three parts? WOW!!! Everyone just have faith and sit back and enjoy the anticipation.

I can honestly say I am little worried about this career move for Shyamalan, and Ill be damned if someone questions whether or not I am a true fan.

I can understand your concern, but I dont think it should be for Nights career.  If anything, these films are going to boost his fanbase.  While a lot of us did enjoy Nights films due to their originality, part of being a director is being able to adapt stories to the big screen.  Night isnt taking a step backward here, he's taking one foward.

I have no problem with Night working on someone elses material, but have you seen the cartoon? I think this is a extremely risky choice for a "live action" film. It would need a huge budget to make the world convincing, and I just don't see that happening. My concerns are that this is going to be like "Sky High" or "Zoom", which would be a total step backwards IMO.

Who are you to tell who is a real fan or not? Who are you all to think that you can read in other's mind?...
I enjoy the fact that at least Dr Malcolm agree with me...
M Night's movies affected me in a way that I can't describe, but I think it was a mistake to sign for this trilogy...I really hope I'm wrong and it will be amazing...
It seems that he's not gonna do that yet, first his original screenplay is coming on our way.

Wow.. okay, before a huge flame war erupts, I'd like to ask everyone to very kindly calm down about it.

Let's not polarize the fans that visit with lists of those who love or those who hate this direction for M. Night.

The simple fact is that this was Night's choice.  He did not have to sign for it, but there is something about it that really interested him.  We'll have to wait and see if and when Night talks about this project.  Something about the project had to appeal to him, or he would not have signed the contract.

I've now seen most of the first season of Avatar, and I must say that I am impressed.  Although the show does have a lot of light to it, there is also much darkness.  I can very easily see it becoming a live action film.  I think that, if Night does this one next, it could go a long way toward honing some film making skill that Night wants practice doing.  Whenever I build a website, I try something new that might help other sites of mine, but I might not be comfortable with it at the moment.  Taking the time to learn it, while working on an unrelated project is a good way to make sure that you can actually do something before you put a lot of time into something that will never work.

I'm going to take the same approach I've always taken on M. Night's films: wait and see.

i have faith in the guy. he has showns us that he is great at what he does but, one of the main reasons why i enjoy him so much is that he comes up with great ORIGINAL stories. ill be like 25 when the three parter ends...i dont want to wait that long for one of his stories......

ill just have to wait and see.

Let me just say that I never picked out certain people who aren't M. Night fans.  BUT...  I will say that the attitudes for his next project haven't been very faithful towards the genious director.  We all know that Night can craft such wonderful stories (6 so far) so we really shouldn't worry.  I'm not, I totally trust Night, that's why he's my hero.  I was just a shocked at all the nagativity that I was reading on here, thus I put my opinion on how I felt about the people on here.

Can we just all agree on that we still don't know enough information to judge Night's decisions?  If you ask me, I think it's great that he's doing a story that's not his own.  Don't get me wrong, I wish he was still writing fresh ideas, but look at his last two films.  He was hammered by critics about how "The Village" and LITW were so horrible (People really need to stop listening to critics).  If he was to do Avatar, then he can't get criticized because it's not his idea.  Only to bring it to the big screen.

Don't get me wrong, I love the tv series! I think it has great characters, and stories. I even think Night could make it into a great movie or trilogy, but as a cartoon. The whole live action thing worries me.

No hard feelings, or anything. I enjoy every conversation here on these boards.

Oh don't worry!  I would never think you weren't an M. Night fan.  I was talking to the people who only post only a couple of times.  Or the ones who are on here and are like, "I love his movies!  They are like my fav!!!  :D!!!  Like when Ivy screamed me too!!!"  Those are the ones...  They have no idea that there are more to his films.   But it's great to have support.

I have never seen Avatar and I don't know if I should...

I really enjoy the series! I have the first season on DVD, it's really fantastic. Everybody has different tastes, and it is aimed at a younger audience, but everyone that I have talked to who has seen the series (young or old) has said that they like it. Nick plays it every weekday @ 4:30 PM EST, give it a try.

mnightfan430 you're pissing me off with always listing people!!!

what about this story of numbers of posts?!

are you stupid or what?

I can post only one time in a year and be a better fan than you are...

so stop judging people...

gonzito,

Please, do not start a fight on a forum...  It would look stupid and we all know that they never work out.  AND don't tell people not to judge others especially after you claim to be a better M. Night fan than me.  Do you know who I am?  How do you know I'm not the better fan?  Please don't be a hypocrite.  I didn't specifically state, "I hate gonzito because he doesn't trust M. Night and doesn't like his next project!"  Where did I post that?  Like I said, I'm not pushing any forum fighting, but you know there are people on here that "just like his movies".  Can I get an Amen anybody?  Like I said, I responded with that saying because of all the negativity towards his next project.  We don't know anything yet.  Why are we JUDGING only a few short descriptions of what will happen in the next two years?  I will apoligize though if it upset you because I meant it in a joking manner, but I can't express that on a forum.  I figured if I ended that post with some excitement people would understand that I was only making a statement, not a criticism.

So, I'm sorry gonzito.

I hope to hear your response within a year.

I think the problem is that we did not understand one to other...

I'm sorry if my point of view was not so clear...

But I still think you're wrong.

And what I said about "the better fan" was just a supposition...because it's a thing
 that can't be known.

I was very surprised when I saw that Night was doing this.  At first I was a little disappointed because I like his original material.  However, the more I think about it the more it makes sense.  Night's last two movies have been beyond the comprehension level of critics and didn't do well.  This is definitely a major low point in his career.  If things go well, his green movie will most likely be made before Avatar.  If the green movie doesn't do well it could be the end of his career.  That is, if he didn't have Avatar.  From what I hear read, it seems as though Avatar is very popular.  Failure of the movie would be very improbable.  I would rather have Night make Avatar than lose his career.  Besides, it seems as though it could be very interesting.  I don't think Night would make something disappointing.

In the end, I've decided that I just need to trust my hero.  After all, he is the one that I have hailed as the greatest genius the world has ever known.  He has reasons for doing what he does.  I should not doubt him.  I'm sure this will all turn out for the better.

when i first heard about this i was a little worried...making a cartoon series into a live action movie?  i thought maybe it would box him into the stereotype of being a kids director, which i would hate.

but i was flicking channels on tv and the show just happened to be on.  after watching it i feel a lot more confident that this is good material for him to work with.  the story and characters are actually quite interesting.

i think as long as he doesn't make the film too much orientated towards children it could actually be really good.

i would rather see him direct his own original material, but this is definatly a good alternative if that is not possible.  like legolas said in the above post, it is important that he still has a career!!  and this will most probably help with that!

if you get an oportunity to watch the show then i would recomend to, it may help you put aside your worries...or it could just make them worse!

i would like to first say:
i am not an anime fan in any way. the closest thing that i like to that would be the last samurai.

on a wimm, i watch airbender the other day and i would have to say that i was truely imprest. i really enjoyed it, and i think that it would be a great live-action movie. and who better to do it than the best director of our time....mr. shyamalan.

so if you ever get the chance...give it a shot. i think that you might enjoy it.

I've been watching Avatar ever since I heard about this project.  I've seen every episode that's out so far.  I am definitely an Avatar fan now.  This show has incredible potential.  Now I understand why Night took on this project.  If anyone here has any doubts, watch the show!  The movies are going to be absolutely fantastic!

Not really. The start of Season 3 (aka Book 3 for Avatar fans) was 'delayed'

Although it never really had an official start date, many said that season 3 was going to begin around May. Now, Nick is saying that season 3 will begin sometime in the second 1/2 of 2007.

could this be somehow related to the movie?

Aw...no. I don't want him to do that. :( That's very disappointing. He shouldn't waste his time with something based off a children's cartoon. That's just silly. Maybe he'll do a good job with it though, and I'll eat my words...but I'm not really interested in seeing it, so I'll never know.

Hey Nickeloden is showing Avatar like 3 days in a row at 2pm...

I've watched like 4 of them and it's totally cool..

I get why M.n wants to base a movie on it!! ;)
