Night falls for Media Rights

Shyamalan teams for producing deal
By MICHAEL FLEMING

Media Rights Capital and M. Night Shyamalan have formed the Night Chronicles, a financing/production partnership intended to generate one thriller per year for three years.

Shyamalan will produce but not direct, marking the first time he will produce a film he didn't write and helm. Shyamalan will create the stories and ideas for the films and pick the writers and directors; MRC will finance.

Shyamalan and MRC will co-own the copyrights and retain artistic control.

Two factors in particular attracted MRC to the filmmaker: Shyamalan typically generates more movie ideas than he can execute, since he writes, directs, produces and often acts in the films he makes. And he has a track record of bringing his films in on budget.

The new venture marks the first major deal for Tory Metzger since she left CAA to become prexy of MRC Films, and she expects that Shyamalan will be very hands-on with the Night Chronicles product.

"These films will be based on ideas in keeping with what has made Night so successful, and has made him unique to his time," Metzger told Daily Variety. MRC will set up each project for distribution when Metzger and co-CEOs Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu feel it's best for the film. The projects aren't formalized, and no writers have yet been hired, but Shyamalan has at least two ideas that could become films. The Night Chronicles will be based near Philadelphia, where the filmmaker lives and works. To oversee development, MRC has hired Ashwin Rajan, a veteran UTA agent who is Shyamalan's cousin.

The MRC deal is the second Shyamalan has made recently that gives him a copyright ownership stake. His pact with India-based entertainment company UTV on "The Happening" gave Shyamalan a 25% ownership stake in the negative; that inventive deal gave the director his usual upfront fee but traded his first-dollar gross participation for an ownership stake and 50% of the film's revenue stream, once 20th Century Fox and UTV recouped budget and P&A costs.

While the film hasn't performed as strongly as some of Shyamalan's past hits, "The Happening" cost around $50 million and is about to cross $150 million in worldwide gross. Shyamalan is in Japan to promote the film's opening there.

"Filmmakers have always been my inspiration," Shyamalan said in a statement. "Working with the next wave of innovative filmmakers will teach me many things that I can bring to my own writing/directing and give my stories the opportunity to be brought to the screen in a stunning way."

Shyamalan next directs "The Last Airbender," a live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon property. Paramount has skedded the film for release on July 2, 2010.

MRC is in the midst of its most ambitious film slate since launching. The company has completed production on a half-dozen films ranging from the Robert Rodriguez-directed "Shorts" to "The Other Side of the Truth," which Ricky Gervais co-wrote and co-directed with Matthew Robinson, and has a handful of projects in the pipeline.

MRC also recently launched its TV production slate that includes programming a Sunday-night primetime block for CW and has hatched digital projects that include an original animated series creation by "Family Guy's" Seth MacFarlane that will be distributed by Google and YouTube.

I'm not terribly excited about Night giving his ideas to other people.

But, if Night really does have more ideas than he knows what to do with... I can roll with it. I don't anticipate these movies being anywhere close to Shyamalan in artistic style or dialog... unless the directors and writers try very hard to copy his style, which I doubt they'll do and even if they did I don't think they'd succeed at all.

I'm not going to pin much hope on this. But hey, it has potential! I just hope Night isn't flushing any of his brilliance down the drain of mainstream mediocrity...

It would be fantastic if James Newton Howard scores these movies. That may be just what is needed to give them most of the "Shyamalan" familiarity that will be essential.

This is an great step that M.Night is taking. I mean a experienced and talented artist like him will not sit quite and keep making movie. He needs to have other people's ideas too. There are many other talented artists around, but its just hard to get into this Hollywood business. There are lots of challenges.

I am glad M.Night is taking this step and I would love to see other people work under his hands. And I bet that he will release those projects under "Blinding Edge Pictures" and that production banner will be huge like "Dreamworks"

I'm kind of have mixed feelings about this guys.  But I guess more than anything I have questions. While I think it is great that we are at least getting Night's original ideas, can we really trust other people to execute those ideas competently (competently meaning from a Shyamalan-Fan's perspective).  And if it's 3 films in 3 years, does that just mean Night wants to get his ideas out there while he's doing the Avatar movie?

While typing this, I think the initial shock has worn off,and now it seems all right.

Producers are actually the boss, you know that, and I'm sure he'll control the projects being very near to the directors, talking to their ears and guiding them in the good way to make those movies to have the "Made in Shyamalan"  :D

Anyway, I think it's a good chance to see how he works as producer. Some directors ike Spielberg has done a good job as producers, although is not the same when the are not behind the camera

Man o man o man.  This is great news.  Now we get to see Night's ideas, but we won't have to wait a while for them.  I think it's good.  I was talking with some friends, and they think it shows maturity on Night's part, still his ideas, but other people getting a crack at them.  I think it will work.  By the way, does anybody know when they start.

This is pure speculation, but I say the first movie will probably come out 2010. Night has an idea, but he doesn't have writer and director to start on it.

Now people will crave for his work. The hard part is that I can't wait for those ideas.

Quarantine Duo Tapped for Shyamalan's Night Chronicles

Quote
While the man definitely incites raucous opinion of his work, M. Night Shyamalan will probably find a happy consensus around news that his trio of thrillers titled Night Chronicles are officially off and running. Shortly after The Happening hit theaters, it was announced that his next project would be a series of movies for which he would create the central premise, and then pass the idea off to suitable writers and directors; that news probably couldn't have come at a better time, considering the vitriol that surrounded The Happening (18% on Rotten Tomatoes). Word from Bloody Disgusting is that they've found adoptive parents for the first film - the guys behind the recently released Quarantine, John and Drew Dowdle.

Quarantine was a solidly kick ass film, so on the surface, having the Dowdles involved with the start to Night Chronicles is great news. We don't actually know much about the first film at present, save for the it will be set in Philadelphia where Shyamalan lives and works. Considering that many have nearly relegated Shyamalan to hack - an opinion I certainly don't share - serving as the idea-guy seems like a good fit. Obviously the guy beams creative moxie, but his execution can be a tad dicey. And while I've yet to see the The Poughkeepsie Tapes, which is the only other project to the Dowdles' name, I think the duo definitely has promise. As young filmmakers in this space, could you really hope for a better mentor?

As Shyamalan said earlier this year: "Filmmakers have always been my inspiration. Working with the next wave of innovative filmmakers will teach me many things that I can bring to my own writing/directing and give my stories the opportunity to be brought to the screen in a stunning way." This trio of thrillers is definitely going to be the new gem of the genre, which I intend to track with eager anticipation.

I don't watch horror films, but I did hear good things about Quarintine, I'm just excited that Night's gotten the ball rolling on the whole Chronicles thing.
