Title: NIGHT CHRONICLES - Products
Post by: Rohan on October 07, 2008, 08:36:27 PM
I know an article was posted before on this forum about M.Night Shyamalan falling for Media Rights Capital. We've discussed back and forth that we're all really well satisfied about M.Night's decisions. Then we kind of stopped discussing about the kind of products M.Night Shyamalan is going to write and produce for MRC and under his banner called "Night Chronicles". So I decided to post an topic and lets have each others ideas.

I would really really appreciate if no one takes things here personal and serious. Lets respect each others opinions and if someone is wrong we can correct them.

I love this idea of M.Night Shyamalan attached to NIGHT CHRONICLES. According to the article it was mentioned that M.Night Shyamalan will generate one thriller per year for three years. Shyamalan will produce but not direct, marking the first time he will produce a film he didn't write and helm. Shyamalan will create the stories and ideas for the films and pick the writers and directors; MRC will finance.

"These films will be based on ideas in keeping with what has made Night so successful, and has made him unique to his time. MRC will set up each project for distribution when Metzger and co-CEOs Modi Wiczyk and Asif Satchu feel it's best for the film. The projects aren't formalized, and no writers have yet been hired, but Shyamalan has at least two ideas that could become films. The Night Chronicles will be based near Philadelphia, where the filmmaker lives and works.

Once again its an great idea. If anyone can answer my questions.

My guesses would be:

Yes. They will probably for writers and directors in the Philly area, or filmmakers willing to move to the area.

Secondly, Blinding Edge Pictures will exist. I think the Night Chronicles banner is only for those 3 movies. Night's individual movies, and of course the remaining Avatar films will be under Blinding Edge (in part at least.)

If you ask me, Night Chronicles is just a name for the serie movies he did not direct. Most of the time a director gets the most credit for a movie. By name all 3 movies a Night Chronicle, his name will be attached to it more clearly. I think that movies that he will direct, like The Last Airbender, will be produced by his own company 'Blinding Edge Pictures', and maybe even the 3 new movies will also be BEP.

I am glad that BEP is going to exist. And its a little sad that they only will hire writers who are based in Philly areas.

Well, that's the production area. You can't work with someone who is on the other side of the country.

What if someone wants to sell their stuff from other country or state?

You make it really hard for me to explain :P
Trading/selling is something different then producing a movie...(although, that's what I think, but don't you agree?)

I'm glad that Night will still retain major control over those next ideas, but I hope Blinding Edge Pictures doesn't dissapear for a while.

I know your point. My question are they going to accept a writer's work who is out of Philly?  Don't answer it one piece at a time.... lol

I've got a question, 3 pictures in three years, but starting WHEN? in what year?

I don't think its decided yet. M.Night will be the writer and the producer only. His next original idea that he is going to write and direct will be some where between THE LAST AIRBENDER trilogy. May be in 2011. As far as Writing and producing for NIGHT CHRONICLES again I think not decided. They are also looking for writers to submit their script and M.Night will read them and then he will decide which is good or not.

Send to NIGHT CHRONICLES. I don't think they have a office opened yet.

I don't think that's how the project is going to work. Night is looking for people to create screenplays off of his ideas.

Even though they look for the writers. Are they going to be writers who wrote movies before or they going to be hiring fresh writers also?

Does anyone actually know what subjects he's got going? I love to write, I'd be willing to take a shot at this if I don't have to be near Phillie (I live in Wisconsin). Hell, if came down to a job sort of thing, I wouldn't mind moving to Phillie for awhile to make it happen. I think that would be awesome...

Well, anything I should say. As long as its different and unique. M.Night doesn't want to repeat himself by working on something he already did. So if you want to write you must write something totaly different to get his attention.

NIGHT'S DEVIL

If you made it through THE HAPPENING (it took me two attempts), perhaps you were thinking that maybe M. Night Shyamalan should take a break from writing and directing.

Turns out that's actually the case, to an extent. Shyamalan is producing a new series of flicks called "The Night Chronicles", based on his own concepts (and twist endings, one assumes) but written and directed by others. And hopefully containing none of his "acting".

First up is DEVIL, a supernatural thriller that will be directed by John and Andrew Dowdle (QUARANTINE) from a script by Brian Nelson (30 DAYS OF NIGHT), based on Shyamalan's original story. No other details are known, other than the movie is the first of three planned "Night Chronicles" and is aiming at a commercially palatable PG-13 rating.

Don't worry, ShyamFans -- he's keeping busy behind the camera, just not on his own material. He's currently making a live-action movie based on the anime AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER

I kind a remember it. I don't think it would be about that idea. I think that idea would be the one that M.night will direct and I think he should direct. I think thats the one he will direct and release on 2010.

DEVIL, I think will be a totally different idea. I hope so.

So, let's put all the facts together that are here right now.

1. M. Night Shyamalan will produce a series of movies. The movies will be produced in the Philladelphia area.
2. The series will be named 'Night Chronicles', or at least that will be the working name.
3. He will hire probably young and inspirering filmmakers and give them a chance in the movie.
4. Three movies will be released in three years.

Does anyone has more information about this? It's been a while since someone posted here...

Yea,

The first film is DEVIL.

It will be directed by brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine)

The screenplay will be written by Brian Nelson (Hard Candy, 30 Days of Night)

Producers will be M. Night Shyamalan and Sam Mercer, with the Dowdle Bros acting as Executive Producers.

It is set to being production sometime this year.

According to an article I was reading online yesterday when I was trying to find more information on NIGHT CHRONICLES, it stated that M.Night will train 3 new young filmmakers and one of them is his cousin.

Okay, M.Night teaching new talent which is not bad and I think its good that he issharing his knowledge, but is he trying to make NIGHT CHRONICLES as big as DREAMWORKS?

I am wondering what kind of movie DEVIL will be. I hope not, TRANSPORTER level movie or even QUARANTINE. M.Night own's movies are way more better in acting, directing, cinematography.

This is what I was thinking. DEVIL should be the modern day PSYCHO. If he is going to pull that with the two new filmmakers then there is no problem. I was wondering why - QUARANTINE makers, why not ALEXANDER AJA, he does make good movies. The hills Have Eyes which was released 2/3 years ago was a nice piece of art.

Cash-Machine Manoj Saves His Best Twist Ending For Last

The day after DreamWorks was deported to the Asian Subcontinent was a bittersweet one around town ? unless you're Steven Spielberg, we guess, who is a few signatures away from finally sticking it to Viacom, or maybe if you're CAA, which had previously wooed the Works' deep-pocketed Indian investors at Reliance ADA to throw money at projects for George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Nicolas Cage, Jim Carrey and a few of the agency's other heavy hitters.

Or especially if you're Manoj Night Shyamalan, who caught nothing but holy hell for a month leading up to the release of The Happening only to nab almost $70 million worldwide in less than a week of release. As we noted yesterday, he and Fox had their own funding deal with backers at India's UTV, but the lucrative terms buried today in Variety's DreamWorks coverage make Manoj's Folly suddenly look like Manoj's Mint:

Under that arrangement, Shyamalan traded his first-dollar gross participation for 25% ownership of the pic's copyright and a cash break arrangement that allows him to share 50% of the film's revenue stream once UTV and Fox recoup budget and P&A costs. After a strong opening weekend, that deal looks like it could pay off for Shyamalan, who brought the film in at about $50 million.

We've seen this before, of course, with the Holy Trinity of Spielberg/Lucas/Ford most recently pulling down low eight figures after Indy 4's opening-weekend windfall. But Manoj! You player! A Nickelodeon movie hardly seems an appropriate follow-up; may we suggest instead a psychological thriller about a vacationing American family on the run from a mysterious epidemic, later discovered to be brought on by ? SPOILER ALERT! ? the exotic money trees wreaking cultural havoc around them. Too personal? Too soon? Fine ? just as long as you don't start making us call you A.T.M. Night Shyamalan, we'll trust your judgment henceforth.

Note: This article is from June of 2008 and it was interesting to share this here. I quite didn't get the point of the publisher who stated 70M from THE HAPPENING - Was 20th Century Fox happy with the money? - And they made a remark on TLA.

 :)

Between...i think Shyamalan might have already found his next set of young directors.../.

M. Night Shyamalan Sets 'Buried' Writer Chris Sparling For Night Chronicles Thriller

http://www.deadline.com/2010/06/m-night-shyamalan-sets-buried-writer-chris-sparling-for-night-chronicles-thriller/

Quote
M. Night Shyamalan has set the second feature to be made through his genre producing banner The Night Chronicles. The project comes as Shyalaman promotes development exec Ashwin Rajan to president of production for the Media Rights Capital-backed genre label. Shyamalan and MRC set Chris Sparling to write Twelve Strangers, a thriller that involves a jury deliberating a case involving the supernatural. Sparling scripted Buried, the Rodrigo Cortes-directed Ryan Reynolds-in-a-coffin thriller snapped up by Lionsgate after a raucous midnight premiere screening at Sundance by the writer's UTA reps.

Rajan is the former agent with whom Shyamalan launched the company to produce projects based on the filmmaker?s ideas. The construct of Shyamalan's original three-year deal with MRC is to make one film a year with up and coming filmmakers. They've wrapped the first Night Chronicles film, the John Dowdle-directed Devil.

The thriller will be distributed next February 11 by Universal. That studio, coincidentally, is the major that so far has shown the most interest in the untitled Shyamalan-scripted thriller that CAA is shopping as his possible next directing project. I'm told Bradley Cooper would play a father on a desperate search for his missing child.  It might stray into Taken terrain, but the father taps into some supernatural powers to aid the search. THR reported that Cooper, Bruce Willis and Gwyneth Paltrow are loosely attached. There is no certainty a deal will close at Universal, and I?m told there's interest from some non-studio backers.

Shyamalan?s now preoccupied with launching The Last Airbender. Paramount long ago carved out  a pre-Independence Day release date. The July 1 date gives the film a shot at the family film crowd, between Toy Story 3/Grown Ups and the Universal/Illumination animated film Despicable Me.
