Title: What did the Devil say? - "Spoiler Discussion"
Post by: theos on September 28, 2010, 03:23:16 AM
Hi everyone :)
Could you please quote the last words of the Devil addressed to Tony before disappearing from the elevator?
I watched the russian dubbed version and the translation of these words ('I needed you') seemed awkward and was probably incorrect.

Thanks!

If I remember correctly it was "I really wanted you." Like, the Devil was mad he couldn't take Tony's soul.

We can put "spoilers" in the title, how about that? I kind of expect spoilers after the movie has been out for a little while, but I know the movie isn't out everywhere yet so the title warning could help.

Thanks everyone! Sorry for the spoiler topic=)

So, why didn't the Devil kill Tony? Just because he confessed?

Yeah, sort off. He cleared his concious by confessing, but also Bowden forgave him.

The ending was awesome. The last scene when Bowden is driving and Tony sits in the back, I thought Bowden will kill Tony, but it was nice that he forgave him.

Currently the suicide story line seems to me either unfinished, or unnecessary.
I honestly thought that the twist will somehow deal with the suicide in the beginning of the movie.
What was the purpose of this story line? I understood that 1) when a suicide happens, gates are opened for the devil to enter this world, 2) the suicide was one of the 'coincidences' that brought Bowden (the main audience) to the building.
Other than that, was there a meaning in it?
I would not pay much attention to it, but there was a scene in which the suicide note is discussed. To my taste, either the scene should have been left out from the screenplay completely, or the background of the suicide should have been explained in more details (to make the movie 90 minutes long:)).

I'd address the same complaint to Tony's girlfriend story line. She came because 'Devil likes to kill the last person of the group so that his loved one sees it'. She also revealed his surname. Is that it? Are these enough reasons to introduce a character in such a chamber movie? :) What do you think?

I agree that the suicide was not as fitted as the rest of the movie, but I do think the note part was meant to be in there because of how Bowden's disbelief is whittled down throughout the movie. Still, I'd have liked a name for the suicide character. Other than that I don't think we needed much more about him.

As for Tony's girlfriend. I didn't think she was out of place at all. By revealing Tony's identity she revealed which one was really the Devil. We needed her to clear him, what with his suspicious hiding of his tools and things like that.

The guy who committed suicide in the beginning was the character that Shyamalan left out from THE HAPPENING. :-)

I just think there could be much more delicate way of finding out Tony's name (like finding a card or a note in his bag or something like that) other than introducing a completely new character that has no connection to other developments in the movie and just appears and says: "Hi, I am Tony's girlfriend. So he is a real person, not the Devil. Good bye".

SPOILERS

I don't know; I thought that the girlfriend's presence was a pretty important one.  Having her there, accompanied with the line "He kills the last person in front of their loved ones" (or whatever it was) added some more tension because the audience is sitting there wondering if the only character that has something to lose (his fiance) is going to be killed.

Not only that, but her telling us his name is such a great way to reveal he was the "Janekowsky" they saw on the sign-in sheet.  Not only that, but with her there, and the young girl dead in the elevator, the audience has that moment of "Now what?  he's the one with the loved one, how can he die now?  How could he be the devil?"
