Yes this is my favorite Shyamalan film, I love the way this film gives a feel of total isolation and a feel of hopelessness. To me it's his best directed film cause he achieved so much fear in the viewers mind, total psychological terror. Plus he did this with little viewing of the aliens which is a sign of good movie making. He basically did the same thing again with his next movie, The Village. Also I would just like to say it's nice to be able to talk about his movies with you other fans, I have all this "Nightness" bottled up in me from watching his films so much it's great i finally have a place to let it all out. All of my friends seriously hate the guy and i honestly have never met someone who likes his movies, real bummer.

Signs is a really fine movie, but I think I still like Unbeakable best. Dunno why. It just feels less 'out there' and more like something that could really happen. Weird, I know.  :-\

Unbreakable has a great feel to it, very dark. His use of color in it it is very cool.

Well I consider all of his films to be top notch.  Signs was the first one I saw, it too influenced me along with the rest of his movies.  They all have such a unique feel, yet distinctly Shyamalan.  His films are what convinced me to try and become a filmmaker.

I see the world Lucius Hunt, just not the way you see it.

So cool that this movie inspired you guys to get in the biz.  May sound corney (I know it will) but his movies caused me to "see".  I can not watch a movie that without thinking "Why was that handle red? Did that mean something?"  The subtle humour in Signs makes it real.  Merrill putting the one can of dog food on top of the heavy bags to keep the aliens out of the coal shoot, or when he shouts "vomonous!" to the kids on the TV!  Love it!

Unbreakable is my favorite. It was on TV this past week, and I watched it for, I think, the 12th time.

My favorite film is definitely The Sixth Sense. I hadn't been spoiled, so the ending was very satisfying for me. While watching I could see the subtle hints, and the significance of the color red, and reflections.

Signs?I think I have already expressed my feelings about this movie, but let me say one more thing: to me this is the best movie a human being can do.

I don't think it is, I think you can always get better at something, but it is one of the best movies made up until now.  ;)

You're right,but I don't think I'll see another movie like Signs.That's why I said that.
The possibility remains, but it's very difficult.Because of what this movie make me feel,it is the best to me.

Yea, it's just amazingly succinct.  It's incredibly well made, and make me feel something that's very hard to capture in words.  Very few movies do that to me, and that makes it one of my favorite movies of all time.

As others here have stated, not only is this my favorite Shyamalan movie, it's my favorite movie period!  It's just amazing, on so many levels.  There are few movies I can watch over, and over, and over again.  This is one of them.  In fact, I bug my wife (who also really likes the movie) because I suggest watching it so much!  Most of the time I'm just kidding, though I could easily watch it again, because it's that great.

While I've been making "movies" for many years, it wasn't until Signs that I really got fired up, and have taken a lot of my own filmmaking inspiration from Shyamalan's movies since then.

Whether it's the story, the characters, or the profound life lessons being discussed, Signs scores brilliantly on every note, and will be the gold standard for all other films in my opinion!

Signs isn't my favorite Night movie, or my favorite of all time, but it is really high up there.  It's just so good, and I think with all of Night's film, they are repeat watches, you could just watch them again and again.

It is one of my favorite movies, even if I do happen to think that it is M Nights most heavy handed film.

What do you mean by heavy handed?  ???
Title: Re: Favorite Shyamalan Movie
Post by: DILinator on February 25, 2008, 01:02:22 PM
I'm not for certain what okokokok is referring to, but I could guess it might have something to do with the very clear, and pronounced message behind the film.  One that a lot of people wouldn't like, and wouldn't agree with due to it's strongly religeous nature.  That's actually a big part of why it's my favorite movie ever, but to each their own....
Title: Re: Favorite Shyamalan Movie
Post by: okokokok on February 26, 2008, 01:23:10 AM
DILinator, you are pretty far off base actually.  I am more talking about feeling like my skull had been bashed in with the persistent revealing of these providential "signs".  I get it, she has a thing with water.  I get it, the aliens don't like the water.  For my taste, there was a bit too much repetition in making sure everyone saw the signs, but that's just my opinion.  That is what I meant by heavy handed.

I have no problem with the religious nature of the film.  Anyways, It's more about faith than religion for me.  All that being said, I still LOVE Signs.  It is one of my favorite movies.  I love the characters, the relationships and the way people interact with each other in M Nights films, and that is why I love this film.

I get it okokokok, too much of the different Signs and you were like, "okay allready, I get it."  That makes sense.  I totally agree with your last sentence.
I love the characters, the relationships and the way people interact with each other in M Nights films, and that is why I love this film.
That is just about exactly how I feel for each of his films.

Well, that's a lot of people's complaint about the movie, so it had a decent chance of being true!   ;)

And you're right that the tone of the movie isn't really about religion, but faith.  However, a lot of people have mistakenly lumped the two together as one in the same.

There is a difference in faith and religion, and I think Night does a good job of differentiating between the two.  It's easier to slide stuff like that in though in a somewhat apocalyptic setting, you know what I mean.

Though I don't know what M.Night's actual religion is, I doubt it's the same as mine.  However, he is clearly a man of faith, who believes in a power greater than ourselves.  I appreciate that he brings that out in his movies, and is not afraid to say it how he sees it, regardless of what's politically correct.

I think it is really good how m night shyamalan brings out the theme of faith in this film. The fact that is it deals with faith rather than religion means that it can reach out to everyone whatever religion you are. 8)

Night is Indian, and also, if I remember correctly, heavily influenced, if not a follower, of Hinduism.  I think he went to an Episcopal elementary school, Catholic High School after that.  So he definately has some heavy religious background.

Even if he is a practicer of no religion - i think its interesting how he approaches it.  In my experience/knowledge, Indian's are some of the most respectful people in the world.  They aren't ergocentrics and respect other cultures way more than we do.  So even if he's a practicing hindu, he puts a lot of catholic/christian images & themes in his films.  but on the other hand, i'm sure that one could find a lot of hindu images/themes (if i knew what those were).

Well, just look at Lady In The Water, I feel that the film was heavily influenced by the Hindu religion.  I agree with you MrStone that he is very respectful of other cultures and religions.  Also, I'm glad he's not afraid to address iffy issues head on.  I respect him more for that.

I loved 4 of Night's films (Not LITW, and haven't seen Happening) Although the other 4 are in my top 5 favorite films, Signs is my all time favorite.

You've got to love the layers of the story...A film not really about what most see it as, Aliens. This is a film ultimately about faith, fate, and family. I think it is a masterpiece!

Still today that's the best movie I've ever seen.Sometimes during the day I recall in my mind some of the dialogues that moved me more,it's pretty funny ;D
It has all the beautiful qualities of a Shyamalan movie, such as the capacity to make people imagine the fear without showing it directly,a thing that unfortunately The Happening didn't have...I know it was his choice, but I didn't share it.
