I like his other movies much more myself.  But this movie had insane production value.  And I loved the uniqueness of the story, but it felt very cold.  I did not care about the characters in the story at all.  Their connection didn't feel sincere, but more like a victorian love story in a way(if that even makes sense?), which is always unidentifiable to me.  I felt distant from the movie.  I was bummed too because I was waiting for that movie FOREVER.

See, I liked the way it was distant, disconnected, it had a very unique feel to it, which I liked.

The problem for me is that I have to "feel" the love story in order for me to fully get involved with the characters intense drive, if that makes sense. I am envious of those that the love story did work for because it would probably be quite more of an impactful movie to them. At some point I think I will like the movie more, but it will never be what I thought it could be or hoped it could be.

No, that's cool.  I understand what you mean.  I am a very asthetic person, and I like to feel things deeply,  so some movies just don't cut it for me.  But the scene where he's lost his wedding ring and then later when he tatoos it into his finger, that was really moving to me.

I cried like a baby TWICE during The Fountain. I've seen many, many sad movies that moved me deeply.

But I'd never wept before. This film made me weep.

In my case, the abstract side of it just dragged me in deeper. The harder it is to understand, the more I think about it and the more it affects me as I immerse my mind into it.

That's pretty much the way all arts work. It only connects with the people who are capable of using their minds in that certain way, which is why different art forms appeal to different people. The Fountain's mode of expression was perfect for me.

That's why I am jealous.  Because the way the story is told, and the story itself would have had the same impact on me I really believe....If only the kind of relationship the main characters' had was more familiar to me.

See, it got to me, and affected me.  But again, I was able to find that attachment to the characters that okokokok was unable to.

My favorite piece of dialog from this movie...

Izzy: They planted a seed over his grave. The seed became a tree. He said his father became part of that tree. He grew into the wood, into the bloom... and when a sparrow ate the tree's fruit, his father flew with the birds. He said... death was his father's road to awe. That's what he called it; 'the road to awe.'

Chokes me up every time.

That movie definately is filled with great lines, but then there are so few lines in the film, which I like.  It definately was very odd, but I still really liked it.  Especially the scene where he's lost his wedding ring so he tatoos a new one onto his finger.

Yeah when he's tattooing the ring is when I cried the hardest. It's just so painful to watch, it cut right through to me when he finally can't take it anymore and begins sobbing. The music just seemed to make all his grief become a part of me, and I couldn't stand it. I felt like I had lost EVERYTHING.

I was also absolutely elated afterward when he finally dies and joins Izzy. I felt whole.

It's not everyday a movie manages to do that sort of thing to you.

That's for sure, though if a movie does that to me, I try and buy it, like the Lord of the Rings.

How did you feel when the movie ended?

Sad? Depressed? Happy? A mixture of the two?

Definately not depressed, a little sad yes, but mostly happy, and content.
