It's probably around the $130 million mark that Fox and UTV start seeing money. Nobody knows for sure.

$130 Million mark? Well, when it already made $90 Million Mark, I am sure it will reach to $130 Mil.

According to Shyamalan himself (in interviews on the web), Shyamalan has been offered to make more films than ever before after Lady was released. As he puts it himself, in response to a question asking whether The Happening is a make-or-break film for him, (I?m paraphrasing) "lol that?s pure fiction, no matter how The Happening is being received, I?m going to make another movie, and another one, and another one".

Shyamalan is here to stay. :)

His confidence was probably related to the three Last Airbender movies. I don't think we should mis-construe his comments to imply funding for movies that he will write and direct with original material.

Actually, the offers he has received are not related to the Avatar movies. While they may not be original source material by Night, they are movies they wish for him to write and direct.

So really - his career as a writer and director is not in jeopardy what-so-ever.

UPDATE: The Happening Worldwide figures are in.... $107.3 million so far!!!

Yeah, it's tricky - there is no real way to know for sure. Depends on how big the marketing budget was, and depends on how much of the ticket sales Fox/UTV gets.

Speaking of which. DVD-rentals and sales will probably pull in an extra $ 50-60 mill if not more.

It?s ?almost? official, dare I say, The Happening is a success money-wise, and will eventually also become a success among critics.

I agree on that one. Critics will realize that it was intentionally made like its made and they will learn that its a smart movie.

I don't think that is quite right... not yet. Plus there are a lot of R-rated movies coming out before the year ends... it's going to end up slipping a number of ranks.

The totals I put down were direct from Box Office Mojo (www.boxofficemojo.com).

The amounts could be a little off - I don't work for the site - but as for The Happening being the second highest grossing R-rated film this year, this is how the site has its list for "2008 Yearly Box Office for R-rated films"...

1. Sex and the City  $134,385,474
2. Forgetting Sarah Marshall  $62,546,460
3. The Happening  $53,196,583

These figures above are ranked by domestic totals only. By clicking on Forgetting Sarah Marshall you'll see it grossed a total of $91,314,639 worldwide. Currently The Happening (as I mentioned before) stands at $113,290,198 worldwide. In terms of worldwide figures, The Happening is number 2 for the year, for R-rated films, so far.
