I'd like to know what you did last summer =)
« on: August 26, 2008, 10:28:50 AM »
Hi there again, it's since a long time that I don't write any post, but it's just because finally after some months of hard work I got holidays and spent three weeks disconnecting from everything. But here unfortunatly I'm again at work.

This post is for whoever wants to tell us what he/she has done in the summer. For most of you I'm sure you're still on holidays, you lucky guys  ;D

Well, I?ve been one week in Germany, in Bayern. I visited the castles, cities and great places of south Germany. I really enjoyed that travel. I study german and wanted to practice some, and I'm proud of myself. Munich it's a wonderful town, one of those where I?d really like to live some time.
I also was one week in north Spain, in a city called Santander. I usually go there every year because my father comes from that city. I'm from Madrid. It was also great, because after Germany i needed some relax, tourism is a hard way to have holidays  ;D

Well, now I'm here again, so you'll see in the following days my posts, I have some things to talk about. Let's write and tell us about your Holidays, it could help us to think about new interesting travels.

See you in these days

Oh yeah! Holiday topic! (Though, I don't think this is the right subforum for this...)

Alright, my story.
I was supposed to go on a holiday with a friend. But unfortunateley, that didn't happen. So I had to think of a backup plan.
My parents where going to the Czech Republic for two and a half weeks. They would be traveling from hotel to hotel, except for the last week. They would be staying in a Holiday Park where we had been before. I could join them for the last week, and I did.

The Holiday Park was in a small town called Cista, in the Giant Mountains. It's near a town which noone can pronounce: Vrchlab?. (Yes, I'm 100% sure I spelled it correctly). I had to travel from my home town (In The Netherlands) to Zittau (Germany). I had to cross the whole country with the German High Speed trains. They go really fast! I had a transfer in Frankfurt am Main (Airport) and Dresden.

In case you didn't know, it's a quite friendly HiSpeed train.

An unexpected transfer in Cologne (K?ln), the train had technical problems. There was a new train already waiting for us in the station.

The top speed of that day was 303 km/h. Unfortunately, when I tried to photograph it, it became 299... :(

I made it! All the way through Germany!

Last year, I went on holiday with a couple of friend. We didn't leave The Netherlands, I missed being in the Czech Republic. It felt great to be back!

The first day, we went searching for the beginning of the Elbe, a river that starts in the Czech Republic, and floats through Germany to the sea. When we arrived at the beginning of the hike, there was a Tobbogan ride.
Most of you probably know that I work in a theme park. Well, we also have a Tobbogan over there, so I had to ride this one!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/erik89/vakantie/Fotos-0029.jpg
It doesn't even look like the one I operate!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/erik89/vakantie/Fotos-0030.jpg
The cars and track are very different!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/erik89/vakantie/Fotos-0031.jpg
And here, you can get a massive speed! It's insane!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/erik89/vakantie/Fotos-0032.jpg
I'd never seen a Tobbogan with a spiral! :o

Back to the mountain. When we came closer to it, we found this:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y44/erik89/vakantie/Fotos-0036.jpg
Snow, in the middle of June. I thought it was insane, I'd never seen snow on a mountain before. Unfortunately, we didn't make it to the beginning of the Elbe. I can say 'better luck next time', but this was already our third try. I don't know if we're ever going to find it...

The next day, we went to a National Park. Over here they have Rock formations which I'd never seen before. Okay, that's not 100% true, we where there the first time we went to the Czech Republic, but before that, I'd never seen anything like it.

And the last one...

The next day, we went to the capitol of The Czech Republic: Prague. We parked our car near a metro station, and took the Metro to the city. There are only 3 metro lines in Prague, but still it's quick and good transportation.

In the Czech Republic, you can have very nice meals for a small price. I took this one for a background on my mobile phone. It's funny!

P-I-Z-Z-A-!

The next day, we went to the Zoo. It's a large zoo, with many animals. In good shape for the Czech Republic. I can't tell the difference with a Dutch zoo!

The last day, we went to a city in Poland. When we arrived there, there was a street artist-festival going on! It was great (and thankgod in English).

The Von Trolley Quortet, from Australia. These guys are really really really cool!

This is about it, we did some more stuff but I don't have any pictures of that. I also have some video's. Maybe I'll upload them later.
I hope you enjoyed reading my report, goodbye!

This summer I worked at the baseball stadium near my house.  I did school (I'm homeschooled).  I also went to the Outer Banks, which was my first time at the ocean.  My biggest thing this summer was going on a missions trip to Nicaragua.  I went down with a team of 28 people and if I were to explain everything we did in the 8 days we were there, I would probably get kicked off the forum for too long a post.  Short story is, I was with team A, we ran a VBS in a really poor part of Chinendega, we also ran feeding centers and visited houses giving people food and supplies.  Team B did much the same thing as Team A, but in another area called Chichigalpa.  Team C was also in Chichigalpa, but they built a house for a family.  There was also some other stuff thrown in, and we visited the Pacific Ocean, which was cool.  Two oceans in one summer.  Suffice it to say, I had a great time and plan on going back again next year.

WOW!! Thanks guys for your posts.
Erik, it sounds a wonderful travel, thanks for posting the pictures, are really nice. I've never been there, but I like big parks and nature and it could be a good option for future travels.

And thanks Mr Glass and Namaste, I admire you because of your missions, it's really nice that you dedicate some of your freetime doing that thing.

My next travel will be to Holland, I want to visit a friend, but after the big accident here in Madrid (did you hear something about the plane which felt down? around 150 dead.) I have some fear right now, I need to calm my nerves.

Yeah, I heard. It's the first big plane crash in quite a while in Europe...

And also, I think it's great you're gonna visit Holland. Where are you going? Amsterdam?

yes, my friend's working for a company in Amsterdam, but I'd like also to visit another cities like Rotterdam, Mastricht and also Eindhoven. We'll see, it depends on my work and how many days do I take. Right now I'm still affraid of flying.

I was some years ago in Holland in 3 cities: Amsterdam (just incredible, unique and so beautiful), Utrecht (I loved those pubs in front of the river) and Enschede (very funny place, so small, it remember me some kind of cinema Studio, the university was beuaitful also).

afraid of flying right after a major accident right near you? right now the odds couldnt be more in your favor. the odds against another plane related to madrid having a major accident are astronomical.

Just a little Namasate, I like it though.  I know, I actually live relatively near the ocean, a few hours, being that I'm near D.C., but I just never went there, wish I had gone more often.  What was it like in Ecuador.

ecuador is beautiful..it's all rainforest and mountains and waterfalls and volcanos. good food. good people for the most part. most of it is pretty high-altitude. some of it is very high altitude. low valued currency makes your dollar stretch. you can buy a high-quality leather jacket for 50 bux. in the town where i stayed most of the time (rio bamba), a taxi will take you anywhere in town for a buck.

Yeah, Nicaragua is somewhat similar, gorgeous forests when you're not in the city, volcanoes, very welcoming people, much more so than in the United States, and American money goes a lot farther then their currency.  Ecuador sound gorgeous though.

I've never seen a desert either.  It's alright Ducky, you'll see it someday.  I liked the Atlantic better then the Pacific, bigger waves, at least where I was.

I've been to Lake Michigan, that kind of makes me feel cool. ;D

I would like to see a desert...
I imagine you could get a nice tan (or burn) there. :)
