I also enjoyed 'The Last Airbender' and have seen it twice. I now think it ranks as M. Night's 4th best movie behind 'Sixth Sense', 'Unbreakable' and 'The Village'. Too many fans of the animated series wanted everything that a 20 episode season showed to be put into a 1 hour and 40 minute movie...sorry, but something was going to be lost in translation from animated season to live action movie...something had to be cut and any cuts were going to be met with varying levels of ire from the 'fans'. I personally thought that season 1 of the animated show was slow and hard to get through. I thought that Aang was too 'happy-go-lucky' given his task and responsibility, but I was well aware that this was a Nickelodeon show so I worked past that. I thought that (and still think) Momo is a disposable character wheras Appa is very important. The show hits its stride in season 2 and comes to its epic conclusion in season 3. That said, I liked how the story for the movie edited season 1 down and made Aang more mature than he was in season 1 of the show...I didn't mind Momo's even further reduced role although Appa should have had more interaction with Aang and more screen time. It would be nice if Paramount would allow seasons' 2 and 3 to be covered with two movies each, but I really didn't have a problem with the cuts that had to be made for book 1. The show and the movies are different entities that should be viewed with their respective positives and drawbacks. The series can take more time to tell its story and can include elements that just don't matter given the time restraints of a live action movie. Anyway, I know I'm in the minority here but I enjoyed the movie and I love the animated show. It is my hope that the movies can live up to how epic the show ultimately ended.
