Airbender Casting is Complete, says Marshall

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 by Specter

Frank Marshall

The Last Airbender’s producer Frank Marshall has posted on his twitter again, agreeing with what I’ve been saying all along.  While there are the three primary characters from Book 1 that are considered by many to be the heroes of the story… they are not the only ones.  Not by a long shot.  They didn’t claim the victory alone… they weren’t the only heroes to fight in the epic battles.  Toph still has yet to join the cast for part 2, and there are the others that are fighting along side them.

Calling Aang, Katara and Sokka the only heroes of the story is like saying Frodo and Sam claimed victory for Middle-earth alone.

Anyway, here’s the new statement from Frank Marshall:

There are more than 3 heroes. The casting on this movie is finished, so let’s all take a deep breath and wait to see it.

Frank Marshall

In a couple of recent twitter updates, producer Frank Marshall has commented on the state of the cast of The Last Airbender:

Our vision for the movie is of ONE world, made up of four Nations, influenced and inspired by the Asian undertones of the series.

This world will have an ethnically diverse cast that represents many different heritages and cultures from all corners of the globe.

And in response to a comment about the way that fans of the show are reacting, (gosh, these complainers are beginning to sound a bit maniacal…I’m sorry for you) he comments:

It’s ok, doesn’t bother me. The movie is actually more diverse than the TV show.

Bravo, Frank Marshall!  Bravo indeed!

Seychelle Gabriel is Princess Yue?

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 by Dr Malcolm Crowe

Seychelle Gabriel in The Last AirbenderAccording to Seychelle Gabriel’s IMDb Resume, the young actress has landed the part of Princess Yue in M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender. You might recognize the relatively unknown actress if you saw last year’s comic-book adaptation The Spirit, in which she played the younger version of Eva Mendes’ character, Sand.

This news is definitely not official yet, but we have a good feeling it might stick. Seychelle Gabriel has had minor on screen parts on TV shows like Zoey 101, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She is a talented singer, but has managed to find her way in front of the camera as an actress. Stay tuned for more.

Dev Patel is Zuko in The Last Airbender

Sunday, February 1st, 2009 by Specter

Dev Patel as Zuko in The Last Airbender“Slumdog Millionaire” star Dev Patel has joined the cast of M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Last Airbender,” the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Films live-actioner based on a Nick TV series.

Dev Patel will is set to play Zuko, a member of the Fire Nation. Jessica Jade Andres has been cast as the Earth Kingdom’s representative, Suki.

Jesse McCartney was knocked out of the role of Zuko by scheduling, much to the relief of Avatar fans everywhere.  Jackson Rathbone, who is playing Sokka,  managed to work around a conflict with “New Moon,” the sequel to Twilight.

Patel joins newcomer Noah Ringer (Aang), Nicola Peltz (Katara), Jackson Rathbone and Jessica Jade Andres. Production begins in mid-March in Greenland.

Dev Patel - Black BeltIn casting Patel and Ringer, a director accustomed to delivering plot twists to audiences got some surprises of his own. Ringer is a complete unknown who was tapped for the title role off an Internet audition. Patel, meanwhile, steps into a role that Jesse McCartney had all but locked up until the actor’s second career as a musician got in the way.

“Jesse had tour dates that conflicted with a boot camp I always hold on my films, and where the actors here have to train for martial arts,” Shyamalan said.

Patel was “already one of the guys I was interested in. Then I saw ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ and the kid just grew in my eyes,” he said.

Tyro thesp Ringer will play Aang, the film’s lead, who is the last of a race of people who can manipulate the elements of air.

Ringer, a 12-year-old from Texas, landed the part after demonstrating his martial arts skills in an Internet vid that he posted to a website Shyamalan set up for open virtual auditions.

I’ve been called a lot of things on this site before, but an idiot was never one of them.  Granted, I’ve never witnessed the amount of anger that I have seen here.  And I’m a fan of the property that is being argued about.

A week ago, I was proud to be among the ranks of fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender.  It seemed to be a popular show that, while it had its’ off episodes, ended properly.  This is something that almost never happens in cartoons, let alone on network TV.  The send-off was so well executed, it was bittersweet when the credits rolled.  It was satisfying, left you wanting more, and sad because you didn’t know if or when you’d be getting more.

The film trilogy was announced prior to much of Book 3 airing, and it set fandom on fire.  Everyone was chomping at the bit to get whatever information they could about the film project.  Not a week went by, in the last year and a half, that I didn’t get some form of a casting call request for this role or that.

Shyamalan finds cast for The Last Airbender

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008 by Dr Malcolm Crowe

It looks as if director M. Night Shyamalan has found his cast for The Last Airbender. The would-be cast is mostly filled with unknowns and minor stars, all of which Shyamalan aims to make household names when The Last Airbender opens in July of 2010.

“After an open casting call in Texas, Shyamalan discovered karate star Noah Ringer and offered him the part of Airbender’s 12-year old hero, Aang, an Avatar with superpowers who must stop the Fire Nation from destroying the world. Twilight’s Jackson Rathbone has been asked to play Aang’s pal Sokka, while Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls) will star as his sister Katara. Genial singer Jesse McCartney, meanwhile, is negotiating to play against type in the role of the Fire Nation’s evil prince Zuko.”

At 5 a.m. on a July morning last year, Newtown native Megan Mazaika awoke in her Philadelphia apartment with a sense of dread that the events of the day before had all been a dream. After all, what were the chances that she’d won a role in the first film she ever auditioned for, a part for which possibly hundreds of women had auditioned?
