A look back at Shyamalan’s ‘The Happening’

Thursday, November 25th, 2010 by Rohan

Let’s take few minutes out of our very hectic schedules and look back at M.Night Shyamalan’s The Happening one more time, but this time through the eyes of the auteur’s fan. Ever since the film’s release back in 2008, I wanted to write about this movie. You are probably wondering why am I a writing this now and what took me so long. I honestly changed my mind to write about it, but since most of the critics and people all over the internet is going totally negative about the filmmaker, I thought to have everyone to look back at the film.

The Happening is a thriller written, co-produced and directed by M.Night Shyamalan that follows a man, his wife, and his best friend along with his friend’s daughter, as they try to escape from an inexplicable natural disaster. The plot revolves around a mysterious neurotoxin that causes any person coming into contact with it to commit suicide.  -  Okay, so many laughed and still actually poking fun at this film’s plot. I remember the first day the film opened and me right there sitting in a dark room with other strangers watching the film, I hear some people actually talking with themselves wondering on what’s going on in this film? I view films differently may be that’s why, but the plot is not funny. I find it very interesting instead. If have you seen Alfred Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS, they go crazy for some unexplained reasons as well. Now, I am not comparing Shyamalan with Hitchcock, the reason I am bringing THE BIRDS as an example, for Shyamalan, on March 15, 2007 described The Happening as “a paranoia movie from the 1960s on the lines of The Birds and Invasion Of Body Snatchers.

M.Night Shyamalan’s Escalation

Thursday, August 26th, 2010 by Rohan

Things are looking up for M. Night Shyamalan! He is in the prime of life at age 40, and despite all critical evidence to the contrary, The Last Airbender has managed a healthy global box-office take of $225 million and counting. His Night Chronicles debut next month with the nifty-looking Devil, and his return to acting alongside Penthouse Pet Ryan Keely and MTV Movies correspondent Josh Horowitz is one of his finest performances to date. No, seriously. And there’s a special cameo! Watch it after the jump.

For a guy widely perceived to be humorless and/or utterly doomed, Manoj brings his self-deprecating A-game to this tale of three passengers stranded on an escalator. Keely, meanwhile, brings her lacy underthings, and Horowitz, as per usual, brings his knives. Let’s not give away the other inspired casting here; let it suffice to say that you will not see a better send-up of Devil’s stuck-in-an-elevator-with-Satan plot all day.

Our favorite director was recently in Mumbai, India to receive an award for his contribution to cinema.  Here’s what M. Night had to say about The Happening:

“The emotional center of the movie is if you knew you were going to die – that was a fact – what would your conversation be like? What would be the last thing you would say to your loved one?”

Thursday, October 18th, 2007 by Specter

Religious movie star Mark Wahlberg struggled with the script in director M. Night Shyamalan’s new movie The Happening – because his character was required to blaspheme. Wahlberg has no problems swearing in his often gritty movies, but he tried not to use God’s name in vain.
