Final Last Airbender Posters for the US and the UK

Thursday, May 6th, 2010 by Specter

Four Nations, One Destiny

That is the tagline that tops the final posters for M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film The Last Airbender.  This film is intended to be the first of a trilogy that has the potential to be a sort of Lord of the Rings for martial arts.  Not only that, but it also shares the same Director of Photography as The Lord of the Rings in Andrew Lesnie.  Both of the posters are epic in nature, one displaying the battle between Fire and Air, in this poster for the UK.  It appears that the fire is feeding on the air, as it does, and which adds to the peril that Aang is in, for the fight with Zuko.  The other is the US poster, which features everyones favorite pet peeve: floating heads.  Though for something that is as epic and character driven, it’s a great way to show the grand scope of the film, and it has a bit of the feel of the original poster for The Fellowship of the Ring, while being unique to its’ own franchise.

See the LOTR and TLA posters side by side after the break.

M. Night Compares Last Airbender to The Matrix, Star Wars

Monday, February 1st, 2010 by Specter

We know that he’s previously called the Last Airbender trilogy his Lord of the Rings.  Now he’s also comparing it to Star Wars and The Matrix with good reason to do so.

For M. Night Shyamalan, it was his then 7-year old daughter who hooked him on the Nickelodeon series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”

“She made us watch as a family and all four of us were hooked, “ Shyamalan said. “I was like, ‘This would make a killer movie.  And my wife who really has been kind of in neutral about my career was insane about it. Insane about it: ‘You have to do it. This is it. This is the one.’ ”

M. Night Shyamalan’s 39th Birthday!

Thursday, August 6th, 2009 by Specter

M. Night Shyamalan was born in Mah, Pondicherry, India on the 6th day of August in 1970. He was later raised in the Penn Valley area of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Coming from a long line of doctors, Night wondered off the family path and into film-making. At the age of 29, exactly 10 years ago, his first wide-release film, The Sixth Sense, opened to great reviews and stupendous word of mouth. The film went on to gross $293 million dollars in the U.S. and almost $675 million world-wide. Landing at the second highest gross of the year, and as one of the highest grosses of all-time, the success of The Sixth Sense catapulted M. Night Shyamalan to the top of Hollywood.

Now 10 years later he is working on what he has called his Lord of the Rings: The Last Airbender.

All of the fans here at MNightFans.com would like to wish M. Night Shyamalan a Happy 39th Birthday, and many more years of success! Congratulations, M. Night, on an amazing first 10 years in the mainstream.  Though it’s had it’s ups and downs, and though many people don’t look past the surface level at most of your films, we do, and we appreciate each of them more with every viewing.  We look forward to the next 10 years, as we spend time on the world on which The Last Airbender trilogy takes place.  (We know it’s not our Earth, the animals give that much away.)

Starlog, a well-regarded Science Fiction magazine, has quotes from Noah Ringer, Dev Patel, director M. Night Shyamalan and producer Frank Marshall regarding The Last Airbender trilogy.  They speak about the first film in the trilogy as well as a loose outline for the filming of the trilogy.

M. Night talks The Last Airbender

Monday, June 29th, 2009 by Specter

iF MAGAZINE: What was the plan with this film and what were you trying to achieve, to re-invent yourself?

M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN: I have always wanted to develop a long mythology based franchise like THE LORD OF THE RINGS. I always thought about it, but I had, until now, never found a good one where I could also add a little bit of my personal vision. I really wanted to find a franchise where my accent could be complementary to the piece. So this was the best thing that could have happened is that I didn’t have a real agenda, but I was on the look for it and waited for the perfect situation.

I was offered other franchises, but passed. And then this one came from my own family it was suggested by my children who loved the TV animated series. When I saw the cartoon I thought it was so well thought out in term of mythology. It had Buddhism, and martial Arts, and CGI [and it was] character based. And so I thought we could do a great job by using ILM and do something with lots of emotions and texture. I knew we could do something that wasn’t going to be just a great treat for the eyes, but also for the mind and the soul. This is my approach when it comes to getting into this type of material, to approach it through the characters and keep it grounded. It has also deeper issues at its core, it talks about Genocide and Balance, and the connection to the Planet. And you know from my other movies that I’m interested with these subject matters — it’s an important movie, not just a blockbuster summer movie.
