Framed: Unbreakable

Thursday, November 4th, 2010 by Rohan

The folks from Cinematical runs a column every Thursday called “Framed” to celebrate the artistry of cinema — one frame at a time. Personally, I like the idea and I even love it now since they have “Unbreakable” on their list. Like every other website they commence their article discussing how M.Night Shyamalan was one of the brightest film directors and now he is going down. Hey, at least that’s their opinion and our opinion  differs from theirs for it is clearly showing where Shyamalan is heading with his career. Despite the brutality of the critics against “The Last Airbender” the film has earned over $300 million worldwide and ‘Devil’ doing great as well. And, not to forget, Shyamalan’s clash with Smiths for a new project called “One Thousand A.E.”.

Anyways, I can go on, yet at least they have better things to say about the beauty of Unbreakable. And, it’s nice how they have discussed carefully every frame. It’s worth the visit and to read.

Shyamalan was offered ‘Superman’ & ‘Batman’

Saturday, October 16th, 2010 by Rohan

Before Christopher Nolan directed “Batman Begins” and before Bryan Singer directed “Superman” returns Warner Bros was looking for helmers to bring these iconic characters to the big screen.

One of the directors the studio went to was M. Night Shyamalan, who was just coming off his massive hit “The Sixth Sense.” “I had conversations with Warner Bros about ‘Superman’ and ‘Batman,’” Shyamalan told MTV.

He added that all that thinking about comic books got him excited about making an original superhero movie. “If they haven’t called, I probably wouldn’t have done ‘Unbreakable,’” Shyamalan explained. “It was thinking about ‘Superman’ and ‘Batman,’ and how I would do it.

Shyamalan speaks at New York Comic Con

Monday, October 11th, 2010 by Rohan

Writer/Director/Producer M.Night Shyamalan was present at New York City Comic Con 2010 this past weekend. His 2000 hit superhero film “Unbreakable” was screened and he took the time to answer some questions and reveals some information on the sequel. Read on below the 10 best quotes about his regrets, plans and all things ‘Unbreakable’.

10. On shooting ‘Unbreakable’ without coverage:

“There are hunters and there are gatherers. Most filmmakers are gatherers and we gather and gather [footage] and see what we have in the editing room, but I’m a hunter. Kubrick was a hunter. You just pick [your shot] and go and don’t care about anything else. If I don’t get what the movie wanted, then I’m okay living with that.”

9. On DVD commentaries:

“I don’t do them – they feel like gynecological exams.”

MTV presents ‘Unbreakable’ at NY Comic Con 2010

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010 by Rohan

I thought we are the only ones obsessed with M.Night Shyamalan’s superhero thriller ‘Unbreakable’, but according to MTV’s Splash Page those  folks are showing off their love and obsession of ‘Unbreakable’ in a different, yet unique manner. It’s a good news for all the M.Night Shyamalan fans out there and thanks to MTV for it.

M.Night Shyamalan’s dark superhero tale first hit theatres in 2000. After MTV pestering M.Night Shyamalan about a potential sequel for years and recently discovering that we might actually see it, but just not Unbreakable 2. MTV is making their collective love for the film official with a special 10th Anniversary panel during New York Comic Con attended by M.Night Shyamalan himself.

MTV Presents ‘Unbreakable: Ten Years Later’ With M. Night Shyamalan” will be held Sunday, October 10, at 12:45 PM in the IGN Theater.  And check it out the awesome trailer for the film below.

‘Unbreakable 2′ repurposed for ‘Night Chronicles’

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 by Rohan

MTV Movies recently had the chance to sit with Writer/Director/Producer M.Night Shyamalan where Shyamalan was again asked about the possibility of a sequel to his 2000 dark superhero film “Unbreakable”. Previously M.Night Shyamalan stated that he is looking for the right story for “Unbreakable 2″, yet we were not sure if M.Night Shyamalan was seriously considering a sequel to Unbreakable.

It’s a great news for all the fans out there because M.Night Shyamalan revealed that his “Unbreakable 2″ story will indeed hit the big screens, but as a completely different film.

“I cannibalized the idea for the sequel to ‘Unbreakable’ for one of the ‘Night Chronicles,’” revealed Shyamalan.

“It was such a cool idea for a villain, and it was actually originally in the script for ‘Unbreakable,’ and it was too much,” he said of his reasons for excising the element that was intended to become “Unbreakable 2.” “There were too many villains, so I pulled this villain out and was like, ‘I’ll make this the second flick.’”

However, as the filmmaker got caught up in other projects and “Unbreakable 2″ became less likely, the seed of that idea still managed to grow.

“I fleshed it out more and more, and thought, ‘This could be a standalone movie,’” he said. “I’ll just say it: the third ‘Night Chronicles’ movie is what would have been the sequel [to 'Unbreakable']. So now I need to come up with a new idea.”

Shyamalan also semi-validated “Unbreakable” fans’ appreciation for the 2000 film, admitting that it’s also one of his own favorites.

“Literally, that’s the question I get asked the most anywhere around the world — if I’m making the sequel to ‘Unbreakable,’” he laughed. “I love that movie. ‘Unbreakable’ and ‘The Village’ are my favorite two movies of mine.”

Bruce Willis on Unbreakable 2

Saturday, July 24th, 2010 by Rohan

Seems like Bruce Willis is one busy dude this year at Comic-Con. He had the chance to stop by The Expendables panel and talked with MTV about his future projects, namely Die Hard 5 and the long-awaited sequel to M.Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable. The Unbreakable front, sadly. is bleak.

Willis stated that he is eager to continue the story of David Dunn, the Philadelphia security guard who discovers his body is unbreakable. but M.Night Shyamalan is a different story. According to Willis, “We’d have to hip-check M.Night Shyamalan into doing it.”

Unbreakable munny – “They Call Me Mr. Glass”

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 by Rohan

M.Night Shyamalan’s UNBREAKABLE is one of my all time favorite superhero movies and personally in my opinion it’s one of the best superhero movies ever made. Yes, we all love Batman, Spider-Man and Superman, but M.Night Shyamalan has created the most depressed superhero the cinema has ever seen.

So coronacomingattractions.com reports that back then the wave of superhero movies hadn’t yet truly taken hold of Hollywood; there wasn’t Tobey Maguire swinging around as Spider-Man or Christopher Nolan’s nipple-less Batman on the scene. And while M.N.S. gave us his take on the origin story of a superhero and his yang, Unbreakable‘s place in the superhero movie pantheon seems to have been lost amidst the higher profile Marvel and DC heroes’ getting their movies in the ’00s.

Thankfully, there exists out there one creative person that must acknowledge the coolness of Unbreakable and its introduction of Elijah Price, a.k.a. Mr. Glass. As played by Samuel L. Jackson in the film, Glass is a man born with a weakened body. His bones are brittle and can be easily broken just by partaking in activities the rest of us do every day. That’s how he came to earn his comic book name of Mr. Glass, as the neighborhood kids called him while he was growing up.

JonPaul Kaiser decided to take his love for Unbreakable, one of his favorite movies ever, and find a novel way to enter a contest to create a customized mini munny. These rounded, diminuative action figures have been popular in the past few years, with both Marvel, DC and Star Wars licensing their heroes into 6-inch size munnys. Kaiser put his skill in painting black-and-white figures to the test and made the world’s only Mr. Glass munny, reproducing the likeness of a lopsized afro-headed Sam Jackson into mini fig form. Kaiser’s Mr. Glass munny even holds a walking cane in his tiny hand. Bonus points awarded!

Check out JonPaul Kaiser’s website for other b&w munnys he’s made, and if you like what you see, you can order a custom figure for yourself from him.
