Syfy is getting into business with M.Night Shyamalan

Hollywood Reporter today has learned that the cable network Syfy, a division of NBC Universal, has given a pilot commitment to a project from Mr. Shyamalan and Marti Noxon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) titled Proof, which marks Shyamalan’s first jump to Television. According to reporting, Shyamalan would direct the Universal Cable Productions project.

The plot of the project centers on the son of a billionaire tech genius who offers a large reward for anyone who can find proof of life after death following the tragic accident and sudden passing of his parents.

Shyamalan and Noxon both will co-write this project besides serving as executive producers. Ashwin Rajan, who is with Shyamalan’s Blinding Edge Pictures will also serve as an executive producer.

Shyamalan’s jump to the small screen comes after Syfy renewed Total Blackout and Lost Girl, opted not to move forward with Sanctuary and bid farewell to long-time series Eureka. He also has some history at the network. In 2004, the then-called Sci Fi Channel was involved in a controversial “special,” The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan, which ended up being a marketing ploy for The Village (2004).

Shyamalan’s recent project for Sony, After Earth, which is starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith was wrapped in June and it’s scheduled to hit the big screens in summer 2013. Noxon, who counts Mad Men, Glee and Grey’s Anatomy, as some of her other TV credits, is penning The Glass Castle adaptation for Lionsgate and Gil Netter.
