Antique shop gets Hollywood taste

We’ve got a report from NJ.com about a small antique store that became a treasure trove to the set designer for The Happening.

When M. Night Shyamalan’s set designer went searching for antiques to furnish the latest psychological thriller, he found what he wanted on Broad Street.

Jay R. Hart from 20th Century Fox knew he had discovered cinematic treasure when he walked into Woodbury Antiques Centre on Thursday.

The new film is “typical Shyamalan,” Hart said,”a quirky story with a twist at the end.”

“I can’t go into too many details, but it involves a character, an odd old woman, who has lived all alone in a farmhouse for a very long time,” he explained. “We were looking for older, primitive farm equipment and decor that would fit that atmosphere, and they had the right stuff in Woodbury.”

“We had also shopped around in Pennsylvania Manayunk, West Chester, New Hope but this place was a really great find. We spent a couple thousand dollars there,” said Hart.

Karl and Hillie Miller, dealers at Woodbury Antiques Centre, knew there was something special about Hart when he entered the store, but they had no idea he was on a Shyamalan mission.

“He came in around 10:30 a.m. and shopped for at least an hour and a half,” said Karl Miller.

“He knew exactly what he wanted. He walked around picking up old bedspreads, paintings, Wheaton jugs, lots of unusual stuff. I asked him if he was a dealer, and then he told us about this. He bought a lot, too. Nobody here remembers a sale this big.”

Miller said he never expected Hollywood to knock on his door.

“I don’t know how he chose Woodbury, but I’m glad we met their standards,” he added. The couple is very excited about their role in the upcoming flick.

“We’re huge Shyamalan fans,” said Miller.”I can’t wait to see the movie and see if I recognize anything in the background.”
