M. Night Shyamalan Open To An Airbender Sequel

Saturday, September 4th, 2010 by Rohan

M.Night Shyamalan just talked to MTV during a press junket for the first of his Night Chronicle thrillers DEVIL, Shyamalan was asked whether he thought a sequel might ever see the greenlight.

“I don’t know because there are so many factors they take into account,” answered the director, adding, ”I guess it will get into an area where it becomes a discussion — like pros and cons,” he added. “Should we make ‘Transformers 8?’ — that kind of conversation.”

With another two Night Chronicle’s movies planned, which he will conceive and produce though not write or direct, Shyamalan is very much focused on his thrillers. He would, however, be open to returning to the saga.

“Really, I’m just writing my next thriller, and if I get the call, that would be great.”

M. Night Shyamalan Explains Origins Of ‘Devil’

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 by Rohan

M. Night Shyamalan is not letting the rather mixed reviews for “The Last Airbender” darken his easygoing spirit or dampen his creative verve. Late last month, as “Airbender” continued to rake in dough overseas, Shyamalan sat down with MTV News to chat about his upcoming “Devil,” which follows five strangers trapped in an elevator — one of whom just might be the Prince of Darkness.

The film is the first in his planned “Night Chronicles” trilogy, a series based on his original ideas and helmed by other directors, and Shyamalan seems to relish the idea of getting out of the director’s chair and into the role of producer, a job he likened to being the goalie on a hockey team.

As part of our Fall Movie Preview, Shyamalan talked amiably about the film’s genesis, how he’s openly borrowed from other directors throughout his career and why he has such a complicated relationship with the public and the press.

MTV: This is an M. Night Shyamalan film, but it’s not an M. Night Shyamalan-directed film. What does that mean?

M. Night Shyamalan: Well, it just means I have a bunch of stories, a lot of journals I wrote, a lot of movie ideas that I really thought I was going to direct, and then I get another idea and I fill another journal. And I just decided to make a few of them and get really exciting young filmmakers to come and challenge me and show me everything and get some camaraderie going. It’s so lonely making movies, dude. You sit in a room by yourself and do it, and I’ve always kind of dreamed of having like, you know, a group of friends and we all make movies and I say, ‘Hey, what do you think about this?” And they say, “That sucks! And this is why it sucks,” and I go, “Really? Because I thought it was fantastic!” And they have that thing and have different languages of storytellers.

M.Night Shyamalan’s Escalation

Thursday, August 26th, 2010 by Rohan

Things are looking up for M. Night Shyamalan! He is in the prime of life at age 40, and despite all critical evidence to the contrary, The Last Airbender has managed a healthy global box-office take of $225 million and counting. His Night Chronicles debut next month with the nifty-looking Devil, and his return to acting alongside Penthouse Pet Ryan Keely and MTV Movies correspondent Josh Horowitz is one of his finest performances to date. No, seriously. And there’s a special cameo! Watch it after the jump.

For a guy widely perceived to be humorless and/or utterly doomed, Manoj brings his self-deprecating A-game to this tale of three passengers stranded on an escalator. Keely, meanwhile, brings her lacy underthings, and Horowitz, as per usual, brings his knives. Let’s not give away the other inspired casting here; let it suffice to say that you will not see a better send-up of Devil’s stuck-in-an-elevator-with-Satan plot all day.

Devil Comes to Times Square

Saturday, August 21st, 2010 by Rohan

With the release of Rogue Pictures’ Devil from the Brothers Dowdle (Quarantine) and based on an idea and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, less than a month away on September 17, Rogue has stepped up the marketing campaign for the movie. What better way to get attention for the movie than to take over all the ads on one side of a building in Times Square? That’s exactly what they’ve done with these rather distinctive title posters that oddly faces the building formerly inhabited by Lehman Brothers. Who knows what the tourists must think as they walk by the giant word “DEVIL” not once but twice as they walk down 7th Avenue between 49th and 50th Street, but ShockTillYouDrop.com took some pictures of the sight for those of you who can’t make it into New York City to check them out for yourself.

Shobha De’s reponse to Dev Patel

Saturday, August 14th, 2010 by Rohan

Who is Shobba De? – In the 1980s, Shobba contributed to the Sunday magazine section of the Times of India, she used to explore the socialite life in Mumbai lifestyles of the celebrities. At present, she is a freelance writer and columnist for several newspapers, magazines and just recently she tweeted to Dev Patel and advising the “Slumdog” star on how and why some big Bollywood stars decided to stay in Bollywood and rejecting offers from Hollywood because Dev Patel calls Hollywood racist.

I don’t know much about Dev Patel, but based on his remarks about Hollywood being racist and him getting offers to play steriotypical roles  is the voice of an amateur actor. He doesn’t know that his acting abilities isn’t much to talk about yet and in my opinion the actor should be careful before murdering his career. Hindustan Times published the article recently which puts the spotlight on Dev Patel’s remarks and what they think of Hollywood.

The 20-year-old actor from London, frustrated by the lack of decent roles on offer, called Hollywood “institutionally racist”, according to The Telegraph.

“Because Slumdog was such a big hit, there was a lot of pressure in terms of what I did next,” said the actor, whose latest film The Last Airbender was also caught in a racist row. “And all I was getting offered were stereotypical parts.”

“Asian actors tend not to be sent challenging Hollywood scripts. I’m likely to be offered roles of a terrorist, cab driver and smart geek… I want to show that I have versatility,” he added. Patel said he was still hoping to overcome prejudice. “I’m buzzing with adrenaline and raring to go, but I have to be realistic. Being an Asian actor, it’s never going to be easy. Hopefully the industry is changing and the casting directors will be less focused on colour, so that people like myself can get through the door.”

Meanwhile, author Shobha De tweeted in response to Patel’s comment, saying: “Bachchoo Dev Patel calls Hollywood racist. Why do you think SRK, Big B, Salman, Aamir have stayed away? Badshahs here, cabbies there. Got it, Dev?”

Night was interviewed by Wales Online and the topics featured a number of things.  It’s a very good interview and gives us some more perspective on Night as a person.  Soapbox:  Regardless of how folks feel about him, and how he comes across to some, he is still a human being.  He deserves to be treated with dignity and respect as all deserve to be treated.  That should go without saying, but a lot of people just don’t care, and that’s very sad.  End soapbox.

“There were two types of film that were my guilty pleasure when I was kid and they were horror movies and martial arts movies,” says the talkative Indian-born director.

“I’ve been able to do my version of scarier movies, so I started to think about martial arts, the philosophy involved with every movement and how you discipline yourself. It’s a great medium for entertaining but also talking about deeper things.”

Shyamalan was responsible for adapting more than 30 hours of stories into a feature-length film, and plotted the film on boards for a year prior to principal photography.

Shyamalan Names The Last Airbender 2 Villain

Thursday, July 8th, 2010 by Rohan

While the fate of M. Night Shyamalan’s proposed trilogy is comtemplated at Paramount Pictures, writer/director M. Night Shyamalan is making sure he’s ready to move forward on the first sequel if given a green light.

In speaking with MTV, Shyamalan offers up some hints about who the main villain in The Last Airbender 2 would be and what tone he hopes to strike. “The third is more ambiguous, but the second one, I’ve written a draft that I’m really happy with and is darker and richer,” he said. “And it has a wonderful antagonist in it in Azula, who’s kind of like our only real, pure antagonist in the series, so I’m excited about that.”

Azula, played by Summer Bishil, had a brief role in The Last Airbender and figures to be much more prominent in the proposed sequel. In the television series, Azula is a destructive Firebending prodigy who becomes obsessed with capturing the Avatar.

Currently The Last Airbender has a domestic box office gross of just under half of its estimated $150 million production budget. It will need to perform strong overseas and on Blu-ray Disc/DVD for Paramount to feel comfortable in ponying up the big bucks for a sequel.

Looks like our hopes of seeing the Kyoshi Warriors put into the movie have just been dashed.  As well as hope for a “director’s cut.”  However, we weren’t asking for a director’s cut, were we?  We were asking for the Peter Jackson route of “Extended Edition.”  Both the theatrical and the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings are considered to be the “director’s cut.”  Therefore, if Night wants to, he could just create another longer cut (perhaps even using alternate takes here and there), that could stand apart from the original version.

MTV asked Night if we would see the deleted scenes later on, though, and here’s what he said:
