Shyamalan embraces inner kid

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010 by Rohan

M.Night Shyamalan is known for spine-chilling thrillers with ghoulish final-frame twists like in The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and The Village. But director M Night Shyamalan says he loved getting the chance to be a big kid again when making his latest film ‘extravaganza’ The Last Airbender.

Based on a hit children’s TV series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the film in which the world is at war and its fate lies in the hand of one small boy. ‘I think each artist thinks of themselves at a certain period of their life and a little bit of me perceives me as a ten-year-old a lot,’ Shyamalan tells AAP from his home in the US.

‘You see it, even in my darker pieces – there’s always a perspective from that age group. Whether it’s Unbreakable when he sees his father in a certain way, obviously in The Sixth Sense and also in Signs which tells the kid’s point of view of what’s going on.

‘It’s always feathered in there. ‘The Last Airbender tells the story of a primitive world which is being threatened with extinction by the Fire Nation, who aims to annihilate the more peace-loving nations of Air, Water and Earth.

But then a ‘waterbender’, who is still learning to control her powers, discovers the long-lost Aang – not only the world’s last airbender, but an avatar sent to save the earth.

Shyamalan ‘not just about gimmicks’

Monday, August 9th, 2010 by Rohan

Say whatever you want to say or rant about M.Night Shyamalan, but it seems like Jackson Rathbone is standing shoulder to shoulder with M.Night Shyamalan from the beginning and defending the director.  Jackson recently had the chance to sit with Digitalspy.com and do some talking.

Jackson Rathbone has said that there is more to M. Night Shyamalan’s work than plot turns and gimmicks. Rathbone also told Digital Spy that his Last Airbender director, whose early films The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable featured twist endings, was “amazing” to work with.
“People say he does twists in all his movies but where really was the twist in Signs?” he said. “It’s kind of hard to say that there’s a gimmick to his work, it’s not that, he tells a story so compelling that you’re on the edge of your seat all the way through the film.”

On Shyamalan’s approach to The Last Airbender, which is based on the popular Nickelodeon children’s TV show, Rathbone said: “What he was able to put into the live-action adaptation was a condensed version of the animated series. It was fun, it was amazing to get to work with a director of Night’s calibre, someone we’ve respected and admired for years now. We’re waiting for his next film to get out and see what he was going to do next.”

Do you agree or disagree with Jackson Rathbone?

Bruce Willis on Unbreakable 2

Saturday, July 24th, 2010 by Rohan

Seems like Bruce Willis is one busy dude this year at Comic-Con. He had the chance to stop by The Expendables panel and talked with MTV about his future projects, namely Die Hard 5 and the long-awaited sequel to M.Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable. The Unbreakable front, sadly. is bleak.

Willis stated that he is eager to continue the story of David Dunn, the Philadelphia security guard who discovers his body is unbreakable. but M.Night Shyamalan is a different story. According to Willis, “We’d have to hip-check M.Night Shyamalan into doing it.”

M.Night Shyamalan answers back to a reporter!

“I think if I thought like you I’d kill myself. Everything you said is the opposite of my instinct as an artist. The way you just thought, I literally would kill myself,” Shyamalan said.  And that’s just the start of a near 3 minute answer. – Watch the rest of the press conference below.

Unbreakable munny – “They Call Me Mr. Glass”

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010 by Rohan

M.Night Shyamalan’s UNBREAKABLE is one of my all time favorite superhero movies and personally in my opinion it’s one of the best superhero movies ever made. Yes, we all love Batman, Spider-Man and Superman, but M.Night Shyamalan has created the most depressed superhero the cinema has ever seen.

So coronacomingattractions.com reports that back then the wave of superhero movies hadn’t yet truly taken hold of Hollywood; there wasn’t Tobey Maguire swinging around as Spider-Man or Christopher Nolan’s nipple-less Batman on the scene. And while M.N.S. gave us his take on the origin story of a superhero and his yang, Unbreakable‘s place in the superhero movie pantheon seems to have been lost amidst the higher profile Marvel and DC heroes’ getting their movies in the ’00s.

Thankfully, there exists out there one creative person that must acknowledge the coolness of Unbreakable and its introduction of Elijah Price, a.k.a. Mr. Glass. As played by Samuel L. Jackson in the film, Glass is a man born with a weakened body. His bones are brittle and can be easily broken just by partaking in activities the rest of us do every day. That’s how he came to earn his comic book name of Mr. Glass, as the neighborhood kids called him while he was growing up.

JonPaul Kaiser decided to take his love for Unbreakable, one of his favorite movies ever, and find a novel way to enter a contest to create a customized mini munny. These rounded, diminuative action figures have been popular in the past few years, with both Marvel, DC and Star Wars licensing their heroes into 6-inch size munnys. Kaiser put his skill in painting black-and-white figures to the test and made the world’s only Mr. Glass munny, reproducing the likeness of a lopsized afro-headed Sam Jackson into mini fig form. Kaiser’s Mr. Glass munny even holds a walking cane in his tiny hand. Bonus points awarded!

Check out JonPaul Kaiser’s website for other b&w munnys he’s made, and if you like what you see, you can order a custom figure for yourself from him.

Shyamalan gives project update on Unbreakable 2

Friday, July 2nd, 2010 by Rohan

Out doing press for “The Last Airbender”, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan tells MTV News he’s still open to the idea of doing a sequel to his superhero-themed feature “Unbreakable”.

“If I think of the right story — and by that I mean something that resonates with me right now, you know, at my age and where I am and what movie I’ve come off of — if I can do that, then I’ll get really excited and I’ll write a draft and I’ll go beg Disney for us to be able to make it” said Shyamalan.

Slashfilm is reporting that M. Night Shyamalan is currently shopping around a new thriller whose title, logline and subject-matter are all unknown.  The script is being read by studio heads under the supervision of Shyamalan’s assistant.

Rumored to be attached to the film are Bruce Willis, Gwyneth Paltrow and Bradley Cooper.  Bruce Willis last worked with Shyamalan on Unbreakable and The Sixth Sense before that.

That Shyamalan is trying to get funding for an original film so close to the release of his next film: The Last Airbender leads us to wonder a few things.  Is he trying to fit an original movie in between Airbender films, and hoping to get it going quickly?  How big would this movie be if Airbender is a big hit and a sequel is immediately green-lit?  Steven Spielberg has been known to release two movies within a single year, so this is not unheard of.

Another question is, did Paramount pass on this script or did the script just not fit into the Paramount brand?

And lastly, is there trouble in Airbender territory?  They had staked out the July 4 weekend long before Twilight ever did.  While Airbender is tracking well, it’s not likely that it will win the overall box-office for the weekend, though it could take the Friday-Sunday numbers.  This is looking like a very curious situation.  Let’s hope for the best, and that filming on Airbender 2 starts as soon as possible (and that Airbender can explode onto the scene with a huge box office take).  Afterall, what else is the male population going to see when most of the female populous is at Twilight.

Now, here’s an intriguing question that came out of a conversation with Teddy.  Could this be Unbreakable 2 or is this a completely original movie?  If it is, would there be a new villain?  Would Sam Jackson make an appearance in the film?  Are we getting you excited at the prospect of an Unbreakable sequel and setting you up for disappointment if/when this is revealed?

It’s the rumor that won’t quit. It’s been persistent since the release of Unbreakable back in November of 2000, but from what Night is saying, even though the plan originally called for a trilogy, it seems that Night didn’t really have a trilogy thought out, or perhaps he was thinking that a single sequel is enough. He mentions not having the right idea for it yet, meaning that the possibility of two more movies is a little less.
