Opening Weekend Looming for The Happening

Although there are some exceptions to the rule, these days, the rule in Hollywood is that movies are made or crushed by their first weekend at the box office.  Take home the top box office slot for your opening weekend, and your movie is going to maximize its earnings.  Tank during your opening weekend, and chances are slim that you’re going to gather momentum in the weeks that follow.

If we want to support M. Night Shyamalan’s ability to continue to make movies that inspire and entertain like few others can, it’s critical that we encourage family and friends to check out The Happening next weekend, beginning on Friday the 13th.

Also opening next weekend is The Incredible Hulk,  So far, it’s been difficult to get a sense of what the industry is predicting will happen at the box office for these two movies.  A few bloggers are suggesting that The Incredible Hulk will outperform The Happening, citing the large fan base that exists for the Hulk.

But here is some encouraging news for M. Night Fans:  At the Yahoo Movies Trailers page, The Happening is outperforming The Incredible Hulk in total views, but only by a bit – 13683 to 12203 as of 11:25 am EST on June 6, 2008.

Let’s send all of our friends and family members over to the Yahoo Movies Trailers page and get them to view The Happening.  If we can vault it to the top spot at Yahoo, we will have done our part to support our favorite director.

Here’s to hoping for the $500 million dollar range for The Happening in the next few months.

  1. Yea, we must do all we can to support this movie! I recently turned one of my myspaces into a giant ad for The Happening.

Here is to a strong showing next weekend 😉

  2. I think another important factor here, and I've noticed some people in the message boards have missed this point evidentially, is that you also must encourage people to stay away from The Incredible Hulk opening weekend, even if you want to see it eventually. If somebody goes and sees both movies opening weekend, he's really supporting neither, at least in a battle with the other. So I urge people to avoid seeing TIH that weekend, and wait until the following one if you're interested in seeing it.

  3. I don't know about you guys but I think we should ALL see it twice on the same weekend or the same day the film comes out. That's what I'm going to do.

We all know Night's films are worthy of two viewings, so let's make it on the same weekend! The HULK isn't really that good, I mean they had to remake because the first one was so bad!

  4. I've been doing my best to get the word out! I plan on seeing it at least twice next weekend, and I'm bringing friends both times.

  5. guys and gals, ive already took the whole weekend off work.

im seeing it 4 times between friday and saturday.

and im bringing freinds and family too.

THIS IS WHAT WEVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!!!!

    i cant belive its here.

  6. Alot of people right away criticize M. Night's movies because they didn't like 1 or 2 of the films he released. Everyone thought Lady In The Water was supposed to be a scary thriller. So right away everyone goes to see his movies hoping to get scared like they did for Signs and The Sixth Sense. They need to read on the movies before they go see them. They're always expecting M. Night to have some kind of a twist to his movies. So M. Night is categorized as that. The Happening might not make it to #1 or #2 next weekend, but hopefully it makes it to #3. Alot of people that don't like M. Night will still go see The Happening because they like Zooey Deschanel. I can't wait to see this. And to get the soundtrack. I love James Newton Howard.

  7. I think it's great that we all want to support the film as much as we can, but realistically, I think the Hulk is going to earn a LOT more money than “The Happening” next weekend. Not because it's a better film, but because it's a huge blockbuster that any age group can go and see, its a no-brainer popcorn flick that a lot of casual movie goers will want to see.
The Happening, on the other hand, is an R-rated horror picture, which will cater for a much smaller audience than the Hulk.
Like I said, I'm not trying to say the Hulk will be a better film, I don't think it will be, but I'm not expecting the Happening to out perform it. Having said that, I'm sure The Happening will have a healthy box-office earning.

  8. i'm watching it on the 13th with 2 friends, and we're making a night out of it!

i also just found out another one of my co-workers is going to see it too!

  9. yeah we are doing a road trip type night and eight of us are going to see it. I agree with spike, the hulk will most likely be on top at the box office but I do think the happening will have a decent pull for an R rating. What did the strangers pull in, like 23 mil? I know the happening can beat that and that is a decent opening for an R rating. ANYWAY, I cant wait!
