We finally have our first real look at Remain.
Warner Bros. has released the first teaser trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s next film, and it leans hard into the collision between romance and possibly the supernatural. The footage introduces Jake Gyllenhaal as Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who heads to a small coastal town for work and quickly gets pulled toward Phoebe Dynevor’s Wren. For a few beats, the trailer almost plays like an off-center love story. Then the floor starts to shift.
One moment Tate and Wren are flirting, playing board games, and looking like the center of a quiet character drama. The next, doors open onto darkness. Wren seems to flicker in and out of reach. By the end, the trailer lands on the line “Trust the Unknown.”
This story is a Sparks-and-Night fusion
The official description says Tate moves to the coastal town to complete his latest project and meets a woman who pulls him out of his shell while drawing him into a deadly mystery hanging over the town. The setup is a combination of Shyamalan’s filmography and Nicolas Sparks’ work: grief, romance, ghosts, and danger all braided together.
Remain came out of a story collaboration between Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks. After they wrote the story together, Nicholas Sparks wrote a novel, and Night wrote a screenplay. The film isn’t an adaptation of the book, and the book isn’t a novelization of the screenplay. I’m sure there are other examples of this kind of thing happening, but I cannot think of one at the moment. The closest example I can recall is The Princess Bride, where William Goldman wrote the book and the screenplay at the same time. But that was one person adapting his own story into two genres.
Remain is currently set to open in North America on February 5, 2027, with international rollout beginning February 3. Here’s the teaser:
